Hi, the Linux Mint 15 RC (release candidate) is now available to download. The first thing I notice is the new login screen that uses HTML5.

(Linux 3.10 release candidate is also available)

Argh! I downloaded and installed 14 yesterday in a VM as I knew 15 RC would be soon but couldn't be bothered waiting any longer. TYPICAL it is chucked out there to the world HOURS after I finished installing :P :(

OK so just installed a VM at work in VirtualBox using LM 15 Olivia X64 MATE.

Nothing new to see here during install, created myself a user account, specified password twice which obviously matched. Booted up into my new install, would not let me login. Incorrect password apparently..... lol.

So if anyone installs the above version as a VM, please let me know if you get this same issue. Used the same PW I always use, matched it (or it wouldn't let me continue of course) and username was correct as the new login screen has a username list..... First thing I thought was keyboard layout during install, but I checked this and was recognised as UK default, so might be some sort of bug during install to watch out for.

Easily sorted via edit on GRUB to boot up into root shell and change the password on my account and the root account but bit of an annoying fiddle to start things off.

I've just put Mint 14 onto a desktop to use as a media machine. Ho hum :p

I'll probably stick with 14 - any idea how long (if ever?) it it likely for the 3.10.x kernel stuff to filter down to Mint 14?

Been trying the 15 RC disk just now, downloaded the ISO via BT and put it on a USB stick for faster booting...

... boy is it buggy. Applets not working correctly from the panel, files not showing up on the desktop, etc.

The best new feature is the Driver Manager, other than that not much that I'd bother upgrading for just yet.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to this yet if you are running LM14. a lot of annoying little bugs here and there which will of course be sorted out, but I would leave it a little while so that these are patched before upgrading to this.

Agreed. I have reported a few bugs myself. Nice improvements (especially in Cinnamon) for when it is all ironed out, though. :)

You can download the two .deb files for your architecture, as well as the *all.deb, from the mainline kernel PPA if you're so inclined. It's not *buntu optimised, whatever that means, but rather is a straight upstream kernel implementation hot off the press. I have used 3.7, 3.8 and now 3.9 from there in Mint 14 with absolutely no issues. I also find the machine (older hardware) is nippier too but this may just be subjective.
