Hey guys,

Trying to set up Linux (Linux Mint) latest version 32bit on my old rig, which cosists of ...

AMD Sempron 2800+,A7v8x-la motherboard,1.25Gb ram,120GB IDE drive,ATI 9600 pro 256mb graphics card.

It boots and installs fine, but as soon as i start the fresh install for the first time from the hard drive all i get is a black screen with a blinking white line at the top and nothing more...does not boot to desktop.

what does one need to do?

cheers. :)

id suggest to try switching to vt1 when your at the black screen, press ctrl-alt-f1, this should bring you to a login prompt, then once youve successfully logged in, type 'startx' minus quotes

I've decided Linux Mint 14 is a bit like a virus. In VM and standalone it works fine. I tried to install it to a new drive but accidently allowed it to install alongside Windows 7 (I thought I had to choose this option and then choose a drive to install it to but this didn't happen). This should have still worked though. Afterwards Linux worked fine but trying to boot into Windows 7 resulted in an 'unknown device' type error - very annoying. Trying to restore the PC has not worked either (using Acronis) which I believe is due to interference by the grub loader (maybe). When I did a fresh install of Windows 7 that also failed again aftering installing SP1- I ended up at a Grub Restore commnd prompt when windows tried to load, or the machine just kept rebooting before the windows loader even started. I had deleted the previous partitiions so not sure how Grub continued to hang about.

Finally fixed it now I think.

Result - much of saturday daylight waster trying to get the PC back up and running again with Windows 7 - arrrrrsssseeeeeeeeee and now hours of getting everything back to how it was. Think I'll stick to Linux in a VM.
