Linux Mint + Ryzen...?

Any linux users here made the switch to Ryzen?

I intend to in the very near future but have two concerns:

1. The last two mobos I've bought (el-cheapo Gigabyte and Asus models for mining rigs) have both needed hours of fargling about to get rid of Windows Secure Boot or whatever it's called. Is this still a thing?

2. BIOS updates - never done one on linux, is it a PITA or does that depend on the board? Obviously Ryzen board BIOS's are evolving at a rapid pace, I don't want to have to swap the mobo into a Win box to update the BIOS each time. Especially as I only have two ancient Win 7 boxes.

edit: don't care about overclocking, it will be a workstation and I want it stable. Was thinking along these lines, with appropriate RAM:

Update: here is my current OCUK basket:

I've decided to to with Antergos17.3 as updating kernels on Mint/*buntu seems like a PITA and I fancy a change anyway. Always liked the sound of Arch but never got round to trying it.

Anyone see any obvious problems? It will be paired with an EVGA 600W PSU, a Samsung 850 EVO and my spare Nvidia 780 and set up in an old milk crate until I've sourced a Vega GPU and know how big they are... ;)

I think I am, just d/l'd the latest. Still getting to grips with it. Installed the MATE desktop but may switch to XFCE or KDE.

Posting rom my new Ryzen rig BTW... :)

Some notes for anyone following a similar path:

1. Your flash media MUST be labelled ANTERGOS via gparted/unetbootin or whatever. Had me scratching my head for an hour.
2. Six year old keyboards originally designed or Win will also bugger up your day.
3. No farglery WRT "Win Security" crap was needed to be bypassed. :)
4. Antergos takes about 6* longer than Mint/*buntu to install and NEEDS an internet connection. Guess you get the latest packages though. I'm plugged into an RJ45, Dog knows what a wi-fi setup would take.
5. Nothing came with thermal gunk like you get with Intel HSF's. Just went ahead without it. Temps are fine, idle's at about 37C. HSF mounting is a piece of cake, I'll add some arctic silver Monday, when I've found it.
6. The Antergos installer is a bit backwards UI-wise but once you've got it sussed it works like a charm. EVEN THE BLOODY PRINTER WORKED.

Went with the Asrock B350 micro ITX mobo as the 320 had sold out, and went with the cheapest Corsair 3000 jiggawatts 2*4GB RAM I could find. Sorry I can't be more specific than that but Google is doing my nut in as I've changed phone numbers and getting re-Googled is a PITA. Plus loads more stuff to set up....

The live. No biggie though time-wise, I had the nvidia drivers, hplip and libre-office and a bunch of other stuff installed all at once.

Any excuse or a coffee break. :)

Can't get my VPN working but that's the only problem so far.
 
I've been testing IPVanish. Works perfectly on Android and Mint, zero joy on Antergos.

Also no joy with Steam or sabnzbd+... :(

Tor works fine though from the Tor site, so not all is lost.

Edit:

Steam needed :
lib32-nvidia-libgl
lib32-pango
lib32-pangox-compat

Installed fine then, now just d/l-ing my games.

Still no VPN or sabnzbd+ though :(

I will post solutions if and as I find them.

Had to do it via CLI and also do a "sudo ufw allow 1194" , none of the GUI tools worked even when launched as root, but it worked instantly via CLI, just need the config files for your chosen server.

Yep, AUR definitely enabled.

Finally got it working though through the VPN with the following caveats:
1. Needs to run as root (bad, very bad, I know)
2. Needs to run on Chromium, Firefox isn't playing at all
3. SSL, LOL, even after opening 563 on ufw

Reminds me of my gentoo days ;)

This thing compiles and transcodes like a demon though... :)
