hi guys,
i have a laptop currently with win2k on it and i would like to install a version of linux to try it out.

I have never used it before and would really like to give it ago. I have had a look round the forums and seen a couple of your setups with ubuntu dapper drake. How do i go about downloading this? and where?

It is definitely worth trying out one of the live cds first, yo ucan grab an ubuntu one and a fedora one to see whichever you prefer. TBH, although I am a fedora man, I would recommend ubuntu for a newbie and laptop user as you will have a better time with hardware (particularly wifi) support :)

fedora core 6, as a n00b i used this and it was MUCH better than ubuntu (was 6.06 so i dunno what the new one is like).
I'm just dipping my toes back into the ocean that is Linux after a few years out, and I went for FC6 to start with. Unfortunately I couldn't get my graphics card (ATI X850 XT PE) to work with it at all. Ubuntu worked for me, though I'm not sure why there'd be a difference.

From what I did see, FC6 seemed like it'd be a good distro for someone who's got Unix experience or used Linux a little before. But I think a complete noob would be well advised to try Ubuntu first as it's a little less involved to get it installed and running.

I'm trying out Beryl at the moment, and I'm very impressed! I thought Vista's Flip3D was good but it's got *nothing* on this!

installed buntu and beryl on thursday and i havent booted back into winxp sinec....

well thats a lie i have got vmware and a winxp install running on one side of the cube but that doesnt really count... i aint touching vista now :)... saved me some cashola!

Also looking to try out Ubuntu. I don't seem to be able to see a intel 64bit version though, only one for AMD
Same thing. They call it AMD64 because that's the name of the 64-bit instruction set. Intel calls it EM64T but it's the same instruction set. Use the AMD64 version and fear not. :p :)

There are some differences off the top of my head:

EM64T is missing some specific registers AMD64 has - SYSCFG, TOP_MEM, and TOP_MEM2.

EM64T's BSF and BSR instructions act differently when the source is 0 and the operand size is 32 bits. Zero flag is set and leaves the upper 32 bits of the destination undefined.

I think there are a few more.. They are minor differences though so the compiler can cope ok.

You're quite right, Mr. Una. However, I don't think Mr. Nasher is going to notice the difference unless he's doing some fancy assembly programming. I merely wanted to communicate to him that the version he mentioned would be fine to use on his Intel CPU.
