I've been using linux for about a year now and I've found the transition from Windows to Linux fairly easy using Ubuntu.

Cheers guys , like I said ive tried mint felicia , which I quite like and i'm just d'loading ubuntu 9.10 now . Will see how that feels.

Essentially they are the same - Mint is based on Ubuntu with a few extra things bolted on. Also Mint comes with some restricted codecs pre-installed so for multimedia it may be better out of the box.

Personally I would suggest Ubuntu while you learn how to use linux. Easy to install... fairly easy to get used to, great for learning the basics.

Start with one of the LiveCDs... you don't want to install anything yet!

I started with Mepis, which was very newbie friendly.

linux mint, everything just works

I'm the sort of user that doesn't want to faff around in command prompt -a stubborn windows user I guess. Linux Mint is awesome
