I wouldn't recommend Xubuntu, yes with the alternate cd you do have the minimum specs but it'll run so slow when installed it won't be worth it.
It might be worth looking into the likes of fluxbuntu. It should retain some of the user friendliness from ubuntu and be very light on system resources, much lighter than xubuntu. The problem is that the lighter you go, you require more knowledge of linux to configure it.
edit: Actually if you need to use ndiswrapper go for TinyME. If it's anything like it's bigger distro (pclinuxos) it'll be installed by default. It may also have a nice GUI to configure it, I haven't used it before though so I don't know.
Google can help you with most of your questions. To ping an ip-adress write 'ping --help' in terminal. 'ping -c 3(amount of packages) ip-adress' would probably work. What wifi are you using?
I think that main issue with my wifi is that I am using an RT73 based adaptor and these seem to have many issues with Linux. I may just sell mine and buy one that is known to work well.
