Was out last night and met up with someone who has put a new operating system on his n95, based on linux - I believe it was pingu or something?

Is this possible and is there a guide anywhere as his phone ran so much faster than mine does plus he can install loads of extra programs on it whilst keeping it looking the same as a normal N95

Cheers

Sure he wasnt having you on? :p I cant imagine changing the OS is a simple process, Would take many hours of hacking around anyway.

The n95 uses an ARM based CPU, so assuming you found a way to wipe and install an OS it would be possible, but I would guess you would lose a lot of phone specific functionaility, like the camera, wifi would most likely die as well.

Im really not sure there would be any point in doing it, one thing worth doing is switching to nokia stock firmware, which will give you a speed boost.

Maybe im wrong though :)

Yea I was thinking maybe he was, but the speed his phone worked was incredible lol
Oh well, doesnt seem to be common knowledge so I assume its not possible. Im on the latest stock firmware but its still sluggish once you install a few programs

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible: a lot of phones run linux based OSes. I agree with tntcoder though - you'd probably lose a lot of the functionality (but saying that, a lot of the functionality of the n95 is gimmicks and **** you don't want, but can't get rid of).

It's unlikely your friend is running linux on his though.

I would be quite interested in this as well purely for giggles (I have an ld n95 lying around). :)
