Hi,

I have a work supplied Dell Latitiude D420 (533 Intel processor, 1GB ram, SD card slot, USB etc). The laptop has no built in DVD rom although I have an external USB Dell DVD drive for it. I also have a number of 2GB SD cards knocking around and so thought I would put Linux on one and boot the laptop on that without touching the XP internal HDD.

This is more or less the same as in this thread but the information on the links people have posted mention mostly thumb drives rather than on SD memory cards.

1. Is anyone aware of any issues using a SD card for booting rather than a thumb drive ?
2. A 2GB SD card should mean there is enough space for a reasonible install of Linux and the thumb drive versions all seem to be cut down installs that run from RAM.
3. I have an external HDD I will use for non-OS storage (re: DVD rips, personal docs etc). What is the most secure method of formating it so that the contents cannot be read if lost (don't wanna to do a UK security services now do I) :o.

Being that I am travelling from Singapore where I now live (originally from UK) to Zurich for work for 3 months, any suggestions for applications to make life away from home easier ?. Need DVD/media file playing software, music player, probabily open office. Anything else obvious that may be helpful.

Thanks
RB
