I'm been flirting with the idea of a ps3 for media and such like recently

What the linux scene like on it, is it just yellow dog, or other distros

Can you do everything you can do on a normal distro

I'd be looking at DVD RIP, banshee and WINE etc

As far as i know you can run everything yes, but be aware the PS3s hardware is gimped in linux, iirc it's one core from the cell and no GPU access at all so very little runs well. Also, there's only access to 256mb of ram as the other 256 is dedicated to the GPU which as i say you have no access to.

It's ok for web browsing and SD video playback but nothing more imo as everything else just runs to slow to be of use.

WINE will only run on x86 hardware, as it doesn't emulate the CPU, just the operating system. (Yes, I know that WINE IS NOT AN EMULATOR. I do love recursive acronyms.)

Linux is finally reaching maturity on the PS3. 6 of the Cell's 7 SPEs are available. Though the RSX is blocked directly, there's a couple of workarounds to access it through DMA. If that didn't confuse you, then you should be fairly at home with Linux. Most distributions are installable now (the kernel has supported PS3 natively for a while now), so all is good :D

YDL is quite good on the PS3, though it can get sluggish if you have loads of things open. VLC works fine which is ultimate win for media. I had a few emulators going aswell and had some old skool games on the go like Duke Nukem 3D and Quake which was awesome! Apparently you can get the pads working with it aswell via Bluetooth.
