Hey all,

Just trying to spec together something for a spare box to hook up to my internet and use as a mod-heavy Minecraft server (and potentially a server for other games in future). What kind of spec should I target?

I'm anticipating a need for 8GB RAM but will probably end up getting 16GB RAM because let's face it, RAM isn't hugely expensive. I'm getting my main PC upgraded to a 500GB SSD and putting my 250GB SSD into the server PC, so storage is covered.

That leaves me wondering about system board, CPU and GPU. What kind of spec should I be targeting if it's only being used as a host PC? I want it to be competent for MC and other decent multiplayer games for small amounts of users (3-10 online), so nothing too pricey, but still want it to be capable of lasting longer than a year should I look to host something else.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) No real budget in mind at the moment, I'll just be happy to be saving the £20-60 a month I would otherwise be spending on a VPS.

Any modern I5 will do the job. A Xeon 1230(any version) would do a bit better. Like you said, 16GB would be more than enough. For board any board that fits the xeon should do the trick just check the manufacters website for the board that it's definitely compatible. As for GPU onboard should do just fine. I'd say get the most efficient power supply you can afford. Something like Seasonic, Super Flower or an EVGA(as long as the number after the letter is 2 like G2. You don't want a G1.)
