Never used linux before, and heard its free.

i will be wanting to sell my current machine soon, and just wondered if I am able to install linux as its OS.
I will be wanting to install MS Office on linux before its sold.
Can i do this? how easy is linux to use? can you basically do the same as windows etc?
pretty daft questions to u guys i know but i'm a complete noob when it comes to linux
