Behind you... Naked!
This is for a couple of games in particular, but the WarHammer 40K - Dawn Of War games I am on about, specifically Dark Crusade and SoulStorm.

Now, I have a few PCs that I have toyed about with and trying out various distros just because I am bored mostly, but also Im simply .. Well, no, its cos Im bored.

Anyway, one thing I have noticed is that getting these games to work under Linux, seems to be a 100% random thing.

For example:-

My main Linux PC is an AMD 9590 in a SabreTooth 990FX Mobo with 32GB Corsair Dominator and AMD RX580 Graphics.

I did have SoulStorm running on that but the graphics were still not great ( RES was 1920x1080 but details were not as good as under windows )

So, I had a play with another PC and this time I used a GTX580 - nVidia seems to be better supported, or at least that has the nVidia drivers, so...

Didnt work?

Was it the card?

No, I put the card into the AMD and it worked on that.

Both machines were running Mint 18.3 KDE ( At the time )

Then put the ATI back into the main Linux machine and it stopped playing the game???

WTF?

I have tried this now on several distros and with several machiens and whether it plays or not, is absolutely random? So what can I possibly look at to find out why it does this?

I also need to note, that the game is NOT really supported but it does need to use that PROTOCOL thingy and yes, I have tried all versions of that too!

Any clues or is it just one of those things?

Proton Glorious EggRoll? LOL Ok, I will have a look at that!

AMD v nVIDIA
Yeah, my main Linux PC has an AMD Card. I was more specifically playing about and experimenting with nVidia v AMD
I am sticking to AMD as I simply prefer them to nVidia anyway. I have done for many years - Since the R9500 was able to Flash to 9700 and UnReal Tournament was the ONLY game that I cared for. LOL.

POP-OS.
I have tried POP-OS, but it was that rotten unity/Gnome crud and I absolutely hate that.

Oh, and I drink Coffee!

Already tried Manjaro KDE

For what it is worth, I am a bit of a hoarder...

I have.. Im just going to count...

69 different distros of Linux on my PC ( Not installed, just ISO Images ) and of course they are the distro, I have all the variants of each distro, KDE,Gnome,.XFCE,LXDE,Cinnamon,Mate and so on..325 ISOs in all.

I have tried many many many variations, some more than others.

I also have a stupid number of PCs too, god knows why, but it means that I have my main PCs with my main O/Ses.

I am a bit of a pleb really and Iwant to use KDE so much, but I simply dont like Plasma... KDE 4 yeah, Plasma NO! I dont like Gnome 3, but love Gnome 2 and so I love Cinnamon and Mate.

My favourite distro of all is Sabayon KDE however thats been a complete **** to install since v15 and I think 15.3 I got installed and never been able to since, on any of the PCs I have tried ( Not many )

So I have been mostly sticking to Mint cos that simply works with only a couple of games being the whore to me.

Mageia is another one I have and yeah, I did try it, but like 99% of the others, I just never gelled.

Ill chuck on the ISO to have a play in a few minutes, but only to "Have a look" on a VM.

I agree with the KDE upgrades to a point... I loved KDE 2 didnt quite gel with 3 but liked 4 but then I found myself wanting to go back to 3 even though I didnt like it too much.

I utterly hated Gnome right from the off but then I used Gnome for a bit and found that I liked it... A LOT.

Now I hate it, or at least Gnome 3 and the unity stuff, but I think this is all mostly down to simply not liking change, but then loving the fact that the Linux lets me have so much choice, so a weirdo that I am there!
