Folks today I decided to get my Macbook pro out as not had it on for a year and wanted to upgrade it to Lion and I believe I need to buy it again??? I have already got it on my iMac

Sounds like it prob why apple made it a download save us putting it on out other systems as in the past such as snow leopard I bough one cd and put it on 2 system

Can't you just sign into the App store and download it again for free? I simply created a USB stick with the installer on to install to multiple machines.

Apple allow you to use it on 5 personal machine from one purchase, just sign into the App store on your MBP?

If you already installed it on your iMac then It deletes the installer and you will need to download it again. Annoying I know..

You will have a recovery partition on your iMac made when you installed Lion, hold down Option when booting to see it.

Just open up AppStore, go to purchases and click install on OS X Lion.

It won't let you download it on your iMac as it has it installed already (duh) but on your MBP.

Iirc, if you buy it on the app store, you can do 5 machines

I'm surprised to find that you're correct.

Is he? The family license pack allows up to 5 machines, as far as I'm aware its only for one machine as its tied to the serial number of the machine. If this is correct then its a case of entering the apple id on the other machines and it should allow you to install it up to 5 times.

Well I've seen no reference to a family pack for Lion, unlike for Snow Leopard, and the App Store allows you to download and install it onto any system which is using the account it was purchased under, (in fact will it even let you purchase it again under that account for a separate machine under the same id?).

Interestingly the license does say that you can only download and install on one machine though (+ 2 VMs on that machine) ...

yes there's no family pack for lion, but in the past it was the family packs that allow upto five installs. Apple do a multiple volume license from 20+ machines. Neither to say if we are allow to install the same license (which is tied to the sn of the number) on to 5 machines, if far cheaper to do that than for us to use a MVL for 300 machines.

Yep, you can. It's standard iTunes/App Store policy, all your apps can be downloaded on up to 5 activated devices. That includes Lion.
