Was thinking last night how things have come along over the years in graphics card generations as it were and also thinking back to some of the cards I've had over the last 12 or so years in my PC's , so here are mine , list yours and add some comments about them.
First PC
Pentium 75(from PC World , yes yes ok ok !) with a Cirrus logic 2mb video card
played Quake at about 6fps and thought it pwn'd lolol.
Soon learnt the error of my ways and bought a Matrox Millenium 2mb(off a friend) and added a 2mb expansion card. A WHOLE 4mb OMG!!
, Gotta admit this was one helluva good 2d card and Quake flew along at around 18fps. hehe
Bought a 100Mhz P1 and oclocked it to 133mhz then added my first 3d card(kinda) , a Creative 3d Blaster Pci 4mb , a 2d/3d card based on the Rendition Verite v1000 chip , I absolutley loved this thing at the time , with the patch for Quake I could run it at 640x480 at 25fps WITH Bilinear filtering which just plain astonished me at the time.
It had fantastic image quality and was one of the first cards to support edge AA but alas it was a little slow and got murdered by 3dfx.
Next up I added the infamous Orchid Righteous 3d 4mb Voodoo Graphics and I was totally hooked on 3d games like Sega Rally(Glide) , GLQuake and MotorRacer (one of the very first STABLE Direct3d games) , anyone remember Incoming too?.Damn I loved that Card.
Next up along with my 166mmx(what a crock of sh*te that MMX was) @ 233mhz of course was a Riva TNT 16mb I think along with a Voodoo 2 12mb(never did get around to the sli thing tho) and we were in the Quake 2 and Unreal era.(gotta love that start screen scrolling around the castle , I stared at it for hours in amazement
)
(I'm probably getting mixed up with a few games and cards along the way here but it matters not its just fun remembering this stuff.)
Somewhere around this time was also the advent of 3d Mark 99 and I was into a Celery 300a @ 503mhz along with a TNT and V2 , this was the start of my time in Unreal Tournament(nay obsession
) , I was in a couple of pretty successful UT instagib clans for nigh on 4 years(DKC and MnM) and through this time I went through from a Geforce 2 GTS 32mb(p3 700 @ 1ghz) to a Geforce 3 Ti500 64 (Athlon tbird 1.4 @ 1680mhz) and onto a rather excellent ATI 9800XT 256mb(P4 2.53 @3.2ghz) even though I rarely played any other games lol.
Then came PCIe , yet another platform change and another excuse to my wife that I HAD to upgrade my whole PC again lol , with that came my BFG 7800GT and my first foray into watercooling with an Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2800.
Got a bit more adventurous with this setup when I also volt modded a Graphics card for the first time , both memory and GPU were modded to variable resistors and I could oclcock really well up to 525mhz core and 1.3ghz memory.
Last and most impressive of all (except maybe those first 2 cards which blew me away with their effects) is my recent purchase of a 8800GTX along with the system in my sig.( Not gonna harp on about it , its awesome and people have read enough about lately I think).
Ahhh memories !!!!
I coulda gone on for ages about each card and the games played on them but I'll leave that to you lot.
Cmon take a trip down memory lane and post your memories good or bad
