I thought of this idea when I was drunk so this thread could be a success...or equally not. :p

Ok so sometimes our musical tastes change and all it can take is an introduction to a new song or whatever. These could be 'key artists/bands' that encouraged you to try similar music or the moment you released 'wow I wonder if there are other things like this'.

So for me...
  1. Alkaline Trio
  2. Alexisonfire
  3. Justice
  4. Maceo Plex
  5. Tale of Us
When I was younger, I liked the 'light rock' whereas now I prefer the heavier techno side of things.

How about you?

1. Oasis - I think it was the first artist I actually liked and sought out their music as a kid rather than just listening to the radio/whatever my parents listened to
2. Jamiroquai - First artist I really loved
3. The Offspring - First alternative band I got into (also the first yaaaargh music I got for a bonus!)
4. Pitchshifter - First time I really discovered a band that heavily fused multiple genres
5. :wumpscut: - Not the first electronic artist I listened to but the trigger that got me really into electronic music

1.Extreme - played Pornograffiti Over n Over.
2. Skid Row - loved Slave to the grind.
3. Nirvana - Discovered on a Sub Pop album, went on to buy Bleach
4.Weezer - Heard my sister playing the Undone the sweater song, loved the Blue album
5.Foo fighters - Loved these ever since the break up of Nirvana.

1. Anthrax - These guys started my musical journey into thrash metal
2. Pink Floyd - Opened the mind to psychedelic music and prog rock
3. Frank Zappa - WTF was that, Joes Garage firmly placing Zappa as my No.1 musical artist of all time
4. Ozric Tentacles - More psychedelia but with a electronica ambient trance style
5. Chumbawamba and/or Sleaford Mods - Where I came to the realisation that I did like punk music after all

Ozo's and Gong are still playing!

  1. AC/DC
  2. Guns N' Roses
  3. Nirvana
  4. The Offspring
  5. Metallica/Megadeth
  6. Van Halen
  7. Joe Satriani
  8. Steve Vai
  9. Buckethead
  10. Paul Gilbert

Born in the early/mid 80s and went through high school and college in the late 90s when a lot of those bands were either in their prime or just coming off the back of massive tours.

I originally got in to some bands because my mates and I were learning guitar and all we could play was AC/DC or Nirvana because they were relatively easy to learn :D

Never got in to the Oasis/Blur scene although I did buy the albums. Can't remember the last album I genuinely purchased for myself!

My journey

Buddy Holly
Northern Soul/Motown
Marc Bolan
Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath/Deep Purple/Uriah Heep/Budgie/Judas Priest/AC/DC/Status Quo
Sex Pistols
Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer/Megadeth
Ghost/Volbeat

Ahh, here we go...

1. Queen - Innuendo appeared in the CD collection in the best room, then I ended up finding a lot of the other albums on cassette in second had music shops that I bought with pocket money. I had no idea Freddie had died until I'd fallen in love with the band. FFS.
2. Bryan Adams - again, found in my parents collection, but I didn't linger as much as I did with Queen.
==== this represents a musical dead zone for me where for years I just didn't care===
3. Muse - Had a friend that idolised MB, and I ended up instantly consuming everything up to Absolution and generally been a fan ever since with multiple gigs attended even though I find each release cringey as **** to start with.
4. Radiohead - Around the same time as being exposed to Muse I also bought my first RH album - Hail to the Thief - thought it was crap... a few years later I went back and instantly hated myself as they became my most favourite band ever. It's strange how I couldn't appreciate them earlier. Seen them multiple times since, also love Atoms for Peace, The Smile, Johnny's soundtracks and Thom's solo stuff too - Ed's solo? Meh.
5. Hans Zimmer - Kind of kicked off my soundtrack phase, although that started truly way back with Vangelis and the BR OST, but HZ is epic and I'm still ashamed I haven't managed to make a live show yet.

1. ABBA - First album I was ever given as a kid. Stupidly swapped it with a girl down the road for a compilation of Disney film soundtracks, I was really quite young.
2. Sex Pistols - Still slightly too young at their actual peak, but caught on with the tail end Sid Vicious solo period, short as it ultimately was. A mate had the ******** and Great Rock and Roll Swindle LPs.
3. Queen - Live Aid 1985 kicked off an enduring appreciation.
4. Half Man Half Biscuit - First of several "indie" bands I was exposed to when starting at University.
5. The Smiths - Again, University environment influenced.

1. Queen
2. Snoop Dogg
3. Offspring
4. Paul van Dyk
5. Will Atkinson

So pop -> rap -> punk -> trance (and trance has ruled me for 24 years now)

1. Blur - First time i recall getting into proper music was the Country House/Wonderwall battle
2. Slipknot - High school turns me onto the Nu-Metal scene of the late 90's and Slipknot was my first gig on my own at the tender age of 12 (maybe 13)
3. Joshua Radin - After the nu-metal phase of high school and Dance and Indie phase of college/late teens, i would say my next big progression was my early 20's towards singer songwriters and Joshua Radin with Closer on Scrubs helped that along.
4. Postal Service - Probably the first band i heard that really combined that electronic indie sound. Set me up for some brilliant artists over time, like Hot Chip and the XX. Probably still my favourite genre.
5. Rainbow Kitten Surprise - Probably the last band i've heard which made me really take note and feel like it was something a little different. Probably fits in with a lot of music i listen to in that indie/electric feel

Probably shows my progression, although i'd say there was a Trance/House phase that sites between 2-3. Probably with either Paul Van Dyk or Mark Knight filling the spot. I still have a really old Mark Knight essential mix which i could as some of the finest music i've heard!

There is a LOT in between but a good summary would be:

Doggystyle - Snoop
Smash - The Offspring
Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
The Birth of the Cool - Miles Davis

There is loads of hip hop, D&B/Jungle/Techno, Death/Slam Metal and more but those 5 feels like the journey.

Interesting how much Offspring have appeared.

4. Ozric Tentacles - More psychedelia but with a electronica ambient trance style

I thought I was the only one :) I went to see them a couple of times. Interesting experience. We (me + mate) even phoned "Roly and Ed" for a chat - they were the protagonist brothers who led the outfit and lived in Wimbledon. 2 drummers, a moog, 3 guitars and all the digital delay you could handle!

1 - Beastie Boys (licence to ill)
2 - Alien Sex Fiend
3 - Ozric Tentacles (suitably chemicalised :D )
4 - Future Sound Of London
5 - Fila Brazillia

Honourable mentions:

Maiden!
Jarre
Pavement
LTJ Bukem
"BH" Surfers
Sisters Of Mercy
Cult (Electic only really)

I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it to 5 :)

Fakers corner

REM or any indie like that
Manics
Oasis
Any charted dance music from between 1988 and 1999

Oasis - followed them as a teen. Was one of the lucky 250,000 that saw them on over the weekend in Aug 1996.

Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel/Mike and the Mechanics. I remember listening to Genesis' Invisible Touch and Peter Gabriel's So aged 5/6 as they were released similar time. Think it was the iconic videos of Land of Confusion and Sledgehammer that cottoned me onto the music. Phil Collin's Sussudio - the drums in that. My ex played his entire collection of the artists and bands listed. I was hooked. The Living Years is in the top 10 of most beautiful songs ever written.

Queen - Remember watching them on Live Aid on tv and I was 4. I remember Radio Gaga and that was it. Very similar story to @Bubo God rest Freddie

Foo Fighters - Dave Grohl is a living God. God rest Taylor Hawkins

Pink Floyd - Wow. I saw them at Live 8 - I was in the front area as worked for one of the sponsors at the time. Colleagues entered a draw and about 50-75 colleagues across the company won it plus accommodation if worked in certain offices etc. I heard of them and seeing them live changed me. I went to a charity shop In Leeds and saw Dark Side of The Moon LP for £1 a few days after Live 8. I thought 1. it would be snapped up earlier and 2, it would have a premium price. God rest Syd Barrett and Richard Wright.

When I was a kid it was Abba they were ubiquitous at the time the first albums I ever bought/got into when I reached teenagehood I properly disowned them as any self respecting cool kid teenager would, my friends who remembered pointed their fingers at me and accused me of being two faced, they were right of course -

As as teen I properly got into everyone who was on the scene but especially Elvis Costello but my big love was Blondie loved all their albums and her still do really.

My proper road to damascus conversion/eureka moment though came much later I was around the first time Kate Bush was on the scene but had absolutely no interest whatsover none of us knew what to make of her my mother couldn't bear her voice everyone thought she was bonkers many many years later got hold of a used compilation album really cheap the early stuff well that was as I remember but I fell in love with Cloudbusting which lead to the album it came from and I kind of disappeared down a rabbit hole and never really emerged which completely fiipped everything I thought about her on its head and well she's a genius basically. My mother still looks at me like I've gone mad or announced I'm gay or something - that look of shock and slight disappointment -

I had a similar kind of conversion with folk/trad but thats another story that was less of a wrench because I'd always had an interest but it didn't get serious until much much later.

Honestly I don't care once you get to my age any pretense to trying to be cool makes you look ridiculous honestly. Embrace the moment.

Enjoy Queen, loved Radiohead's Ok Computer and The Bends was properly obsessed for a while can't really get into their later stuff. Movie soundtracks well Ennio Morricone is god basically. Also anything by the Smiths. Wonderful.

1. Sex Pistols. I was 10 when Never Mind the ******** came out and my older brother had bought it. I loved it so he ended up giving it to me. The 70s Pistols not the John Lydon pantomime dame reissue. I do wonder what would have happened if Glen Matlock hadn’t been fired so Sid Vicious could join.
2. Two Tone. I can’t narrow it down to a single group so I’ll lump the whole genre in as one. My formative years.
3. Belinda Carlisle. I liked the Go-Go’s but when BC, as us cool kids called her, went solo I got really into her music.
4. N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton says it all for me, a middle aged white male.
5. Dido. After the upbeat happy go lucky tunes of the aforementioned BC, I like to drag my mood back down with the melancholic tunes of Dido.

There’s so much more that this but as the OP said 5 that’s what I’ve put.

I am really enjoying this thread. Great leveller music taste is. Sorry didn’t mean to sound like Yoda there.

Another classic band, out of the 70s political turmoil, is Conflict. “All government is wrong” IIRC. Why aren’t we seeing bands like that now, conditions the same, where is the anger??
