Hey!

Could anyone point me in the right direction for this please;

I am looking at a server to manage a group of computers (about 20) but I have never learnt how the ins and outs of it works. I just want to know how it is exactly done.

So far I want to use Windows 2003 STD edition on a computer thats in a network and from there how do I install on various computers, assign rights, create users in a group, etc or do I have to go to each one to install, etc

I've tried books but they beat around the bush if anything with a lot of jargon, also tried Google but no luck so far, if you know of any sites or experience spare a few seconds to let me know please :p

What you are looking for is Active Diretory, which is part of Windows Server 2003 (and 2000).

The best way to learn is to install it and have a play.

As long as you are fairly confident in finding your way round windows permissions and things along those lines it is fairly intuitive. It can obviously get a lot more in depth with roaming profiles and the like, but just have a play and then when there is something you dont know ask on that specific thing or search google for it.

Explaining the whole of Windows Server and Active Directory is a complicated thing for anyone :)

Also remember when you do come to putting 20 users on it, then you will need 20 CAL licenses (Client Access Licenses, MS's little way of making sure you pay for every person/pc that connects to your server), so factor that into your costs.

Agreed,

Nothing better than experiance and having a play. It can be a little daunting at first, but stick to it. There is loads of guides and tutorials on the net.

Good luck.

Useful info guys, also been digging away at Google and found a few things. If there is one thing I've known with these programs it is playing about and using trial and error, luckily I don't mind doing that for hours!

Thanks! :- )~
