Hi. i'm planning on getting a new PC, and building it myself. So far i've come up with the items seen below.
I have a couple of worries.
1. Does everything function together? (the Processor didn't say LGA775... but i'm pretty sure that is it's socket.)

2. Will the after market cooler on the processor fit into the board? A number of people said about the boards piping can mean coolers won't fit. If so, could you recommend me a better cooler.

3. If there are any parts that could be improved or changed. Please recommend them.

My budget is around £720.

Hi there,

Are you going to be overclocking?

You could save money by dropping to the p5q-e board, as the only real difference is ddr3 and 16 phase power.

Im not sure about that square cooler, but ive got a tuniq tower which is humongous and although fiddly was perfectly mountablen in my p5q-e.

do you need the monster case? its a biggie. you could go for the 900 or the akasa infiniti, the p182 etc and save a few bob.

i would swap the hdd to the 320 gig samsun F1. read the reviews.

money saved you could upgrade the cpu cooler to a noctua or tuniq and chuck in an extra 2gig of ram which would cheer windows up....but then you are going for xp which only addresses 3gb i believe. so maybee forget that plan.

my 2p. im sure someone with more experience will come along and post too!

agree with the 320 f1 hdd and yeah thats a big case, with the saved money you could look and either a 48*0 or gtx 2*0 card. If you are going to be gaming those would be the best changes.

Also if you went for the extra 2gig of ram you might be better looking at a 64bit os, vista also allows you for the use of dx 10

You are spending £750 and ending up Windows XP and 2gb memory?
Fail* imho.

*I'm not saying Vista is currently better but... fine if you dont mind shelling out again for the OS you could have bought now in 2 years time. And giving M$ more over the long run.

this spec comes in just over your budget, you could save money by getting a smaller hard drive than the one i have specced, or changing the graphics card to a 4850 (don't get the 8800gtx as the 4850 is faster and cheaper than it).

I think i'll probably go with this option.

seems to be the most powerful, and i can drop some money off of it by not having the DVD Rom. Since i have one in my older PC.

Thanks for all the replies. :):) Much appreciated.

Edit: I will likely only Overclock the Q6600 to 3Ghz.

What are your main uses for the PC? What monitor will you be using?

Assuming your gaming, from the spec you've posted above I'd switch to an e8400 CPU, Vista Home Premium 64 and a 4870. This will give you the best performance for the money imo. At present, you won't be able to address all of your RAM with XP x86.

Hope this helps.

Problem is though, is that that spec isn't the most powerful as you'll get about 3.25GB of RAM out of it. Plus, I really don't see the benefit of paying good money for XP in this day and age.

Also, that Antec case isn't supplied with any front fans (the Lian Li is) so you're paying an extra £5-£10 anyway.
