Does anyone know of any kind of live linux distro or other live cd that can be used for recovering files off computers/virus removal etc?

I'm trying to remove a virus from a windows xp system, but may need to reformat and remove valuble files if that's not possible. And there's no way I can connect the hard drive to my computer or another pc atm.

BartPe
Powermix
WinPE
Hirens bootcd

Quite a few about usualy have AV/spyware removal software and recovery software integrated. But you would have to torrent/emule em.

Knoppx is another good one. A significant number of the mainstream distros now offer live discs if you look on their sites.

bartpe is a good one, you need a windows disc setup files in say C:\XPCD, then you point bartpe at it, it does it's stuff, and you get an ISO at the end of it

:)

knoppix is raved on about a lot, but i can't say I've used it, i usually just use a live windows disc, and have 7zfm on there (the 7zip file manager) it's more stable than a 'live' explorer

Tried knoppx but found it didnt quite have the options/features/software I needed, powermix still one the most stable/bootdisc type proggys which has the lot.

You can always find it easily... and tbh rather then remove viruses/spyware your better off just copying your important files over to an external hdd and then formating it and reloading XP.
Always a lot easier...

And thats the best part you can plug in an usb device and it will get detected by powermix or bartpe type software.

Tried a version of knoppix and it jammed on 100% cpu, after failing to download the antivirus program I thought was already installed.

I've looked for powermix but google returns nothing.
