Live CDs - Please Advise - How to Create

Hi all

I already have a post going, but I thought this is best in a separate thread.

So I am going to try to put Ubuntu onto a second PC (not this one). I have downloaded various ISO files, and I have plenty of blank disks.

Note: USB stick is not an option at the moment.

I need to make a bootable disk that will run on a PC with a HDD that is totally blank. I have BIOS and BOOT MENUs, but nothing else.

Most of the advice on Google seems to be from people who don't seem to grasp that some HDDs have nothing on them. They get mixed up and start talking about Windows (which is irrelevant).

In Windows 7 (on this PC), Right-Clicking on the ISO files and trying to use Windows Disc Image Burner does not work -- it says the file is invalid.

I wish to know how to make a bootable disk that will work in an optical drive in my second system that has a HDD that is "as empty as a hermit's address book" (Blackadder).

No-one else has chipped in so once again whilst I'm not sure I can really help:

I normally double left click which seems inevitably the same as your approach to burning an iso file.

If the file was corrupt, something always suggested but never the case in my experience, I assume the burn sequence would 'commence' in some fashion followed by a reference to a corrupt file.
Theoretically invalid could perhaps be the reference if Windows spots a problem before the burn is attempted, but I'm just speculating.

One obvious approach would be to try other iso's since it seems unlikely they would all be corrupt which leaves the Drive unit or the Windows installation.
I can't think of any more possibilities.

Another PC would seem to be the next step.
If it fails, download an iso to that PC's HDD and attempt to burn using that PC to eliminate any potential issues with the PC and HDD/media you're using now.

I use Infra Recorder to burn .iso to optical discs. You seem to be making it more difficult than it needs to be.

You might need to check the md5 checksum on the downloaded iso. I don't think Windows can do this without downloading some software

I'll give it a try.
