Hey all,

Been using my own email address to sign in to Messenger for years now, so it came as a shock to me to see that it wouldn't let me do the same today.

I typed the password in and it came up with a message saying "We've made some changes to your account, please verify the changes before proceeding" or something to that affect.

Anyway, it auto-loaded the microsoft live id page and wanted me to sign up for a hotmail.co.uk id. Ok, I thought.. I selected "use my own email" and when I typed in the one I'd been using it said "This address is the same as your current one, choose another or create a new live ID"

I'm not being funny but I DON'T WANT a stupid Live ID that's why I haven't signed up for one, so I haven't got a clue how I'm going to use MSN anymore. Why are they suddenly stopping people using their own emails?

Anyone else had the same??

At the moment I'm using a Windows PC, not sure of the version... doubt it's the latest.

I usually use a Mac so i'll go check that before I post any more agro ;)

My messenger stopped working the other day also. I didnt want to upgrade as this will bring back all the stupid adverts.
I am using trllian now & quite happy with that for my basic needs.

I was using v 7.0 and the other day I was "told" I had to upgrade (if I wanted to use MSN Messenger), anyway I did so, but also installed A-Patch which allows you to Disable a lot of useless stuff in Windows Live Messenger...:)

i don't understand why its compulsory to have the update messenger version because of a security flaw, surely its your choice if you want to be more secure of not and not theres

But you're using their service, therefore they're well within their rights to require you to use the safer, more recent versions of the software. Also means they can implement features etc without worrying about it causing problems for people too stubborn to upgrade.
