Okay so because I got forced to upgrade to the new Messenger (was ignoring the update, figured it'd be minor and I bet it is) anyway I went to update and now I constantly get this error when installing;

I have tried changing permissions to the registry key, that didn't work so I deleted the key then I tried running installer clean ups and removing all the other Windows Live crap but I can't get it to install no matter what.

I used to have problems installing the old version of WLM on PCs, only since XP SP3, I might add and use the following and it works...

Start > Run 'regsvr32 wups2.dll' (without the quotes) [ENTER]

Rest assured it's still a pile of ____ when it's installed.

Try creating a new temp admin account and running the installer from there. Worth a shot. If it installs correctly, just delete that account.

Got exactly the same thing when i upgraded mine yesterday. Ended up having to close evetything, then iopen IE and go to the msn webpage.

I had nothing but problems with this on my laptop... After a format all was well... Surely there is another solution though

My update worked fine :s

Do know of a raft of alternatives to msn though :), amsn, pidgin and my fav. emesene (all the ones i use on linux anyway)

Bah I give up.

I hopped over to "oldversion.com" and downloaded Live Messenger 8.5, installed that and got prompted to update.

It updated me to a slightly more recent 8.5 build and now I can sign in fine? Yet MSN would not let me sign in with a 2009 build of Live Messenger 9 it lets me use a 2008 build of 8.5 just fine...

Seriously, Windows Live is just a MESS. I hate it but alternatives don't seem to use personal message/now playing plugins properly for me!

Had this problem earlier while sorting out me sisters laptop, i used zappmessenger to get rid of it all together & then installed from fresh :)

had it bout an hour ago :p close all internet explorers and if needed restart ur pc, but the others r right, its **** when its installed anyway

Perhaps the MSN servers detected you were running a release of WLM 2009 that wasn't the latest release. But they are OK with you running 8.5. :) Which is better anyway. :p Especially when A-Patched. ;)

And I fully agree with you on the alternatives. Pidgin is my favourite non-WLM MSN client but it just doesn't do some things as well as WLM can. :(

Whatever happened to the old days of IM'ing where IM's were around 2mb or so. WLM has indeed turned into an utter pos. Sometimes I feel like installing Miranda all over again.

Yep I much preferred 8.5 but figured I would be forced to update so never went back to it! Glad to be back on it though. :)

Amazing isnt it! And what do they all have in common? We can still send the same text messages to each other! So much bloated **** in messenger now it's absolutely unreal. Give me a strip down option for pure IM and webcam puh-lease!
