live tv software?

So windows 10 doesn't include windows media centre now and it's officially dead.

What other software is there?

I couldn't figure out how to get xbmc working,
But there must be something else simple and elegant out there, what does everyone use?
Or are those of us using windows media centre stuffed.

Sky+HD, Virgin Media TiVo, or a FreeviewHD Recorder.

I don't understand why anyone would want to put TV through a PC any more?

One box instead of many.

None if those suggestions dies everything. Why would I keep wanting to switch between boxes, when atm all I do is switch between apps.

Rofl. why would I want extra remote, extra box, let alone an extra box that costs hundreds, for zero reason and makes life harder.

For a start those boxes cost a lot.
Then with sky box, don't know about virgin. You have to buy a £25 card to watch freest, then if you record it's something like a £5 per month subscription.

Just because I don't know if there's alternative software, doesn't mean there isn't. I've just always used media centre.as it works flawlessly out if the box.

And htpc is so much better than virgin/skybox.

Even if TV had built in freest then I wouldn't use it, that still requires changing devices and extra remote, for no benefit and unlikely to have recording features built in.

Down stairs is still many devices and it's a rubbish set up. All in one set ups are far better.

Off course not, but I would still need a htpc as no box does everything I want.
So why spend two or three times as much for a worse set up,

I have a harmony remote and it's still rubbish compared to a mini keyboard and htpc.
Have fun searching youtube, amazon, Netflix and other services without a full keyboard.

£170 done, with no switching. Actually cheaper than that these days. And your setep still doesn't play iTunes and Xbox videos.

And no you cannot really use sky box as I've already said.

Why not just not update to Windows 10 if your current setup does everything you need?

As I imagine after a few months that the apps may have issue. Or that I might want w10 only apps.
I would rather upgrade asap.
Although if there's no satisfactory solution, I'll wait a few months until things start breaking or something else turns up.

There is no faffage and there isn't anything simpler, it's just as easy as any other box.
It's a modern guide like any other box.

Other than installing, running a channel search and making a favourite guide that has been it.
No different than any sky/virgin box.

Why is it not properly equipped for it?
There's several suggestion in here I will have a look at.

And again. It isn't just live TV.

Freesat
Xbox video
NowTV
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Youtube
ITunes for some legacy films I own from apple days.
Livestream
Nasa TV
Twitch
Patreon

Windows is still the best solution for that. And no other system can do it.
Yeah I could go multiple system like you, but why, it's more clutter, more expensive, harder to use. Time consuming to use - switching between devices.

Windows everything always on and I just switch between apps through top right corner, or in w10 it'll be through viewer. bit like pressing home button and seeing a screen of options. But instead they are all there. No load times like most slow boxes.

I don't just think there is, I know it is. I have bedroom set up lovely, one tiny fatness pc. Lounge is multiple devices and horrible.
Lounge is set up as you describe. And frankly it's rubbish. Xbox 360, sky box, blue ray player. Not only is it rubbish and hard to use. It doesn't even have as much functionality as up stairs.

Yeas because a fire TV does all that. Oh wait it doesn't does it. You'll need a humax box as well. As well as Xbox 360.

Yes I already have a harmony remote and it doesn't solve a lot of the issues with multiple devices.

Why are you so butthurt. Do you miss your htpc?

Yeah so seamless you have to wait for Xbox 360 to boot up. It's slow. Harmony remote doesn't have a full keyboard.
No Xbox/fire TV etc has full browser for the few things without an app.

Obviously such a great solution. Or maybe it's not and you are just plain wrong.

Lol, because software and hardware has not moved on at all.
Did you even run it with windows 8 and apps,

Zero faf, no fiddling required, dies everything, far less load times, far easier.

Because I don't need a 360 with a htpc. That's my point.
Or have you missed the only need one device bit, I know you haven't you're just sprouting rubbish.

That's funny, I'm perfectly happy with my set up.
And won't be going back to multiple devices.

You suggested something that isn't suitable, well done. then got obsessed with it, even though you know full well it isn't suitable.

Not worked up at all, just pointing out you are very wrong.

It wasn't even a good suggestion, does it actually fit in with the OP? No
Do I need to mention unrelated criteria? It's pretty clear what I'm looking for.

Yep software to replace media centre, how does a several hundred pound box fill that criteria. Did I ask fir hardware?

Even when explained you still carried on like an obsessed squirrel

Well downloaded media portal, reasonably easy to set up, not as easy as wmc.
Seems to be working fine, excoet it hasn't downloaded epg yet. Hopefully it'll di that soon. I can't see a force download epg. Anywhere.

So will continue to use it for a while, but it's looking good.

Well I'm finding media portal better than wmc.
Yes it's not as easy to set up, but it's not that difficult.
Although epg still isn't working, need to bring the install guide back up and see what setting I've missed out.

On plus side I know have bbc3 which never worked on wmc and a couple of other channels which I'm not bothered about.

I ditched WMC in favour of MediaPortal for TV purposes several years ago and haven't looked back. In particular, MP can record any number of channels on a single tuner if they're on the same mux (DVB-T) or transponder (DVB-S), so one dual-tuner card is normally enough to cover pretty much any eventuality.

Having said that, setting up the EPG is a royal pain in the arris until you get the hang of it - have a look at this guide at AVForums if you haven't already. It's a bit out of date but still useful, and the EPG walkthrough (section 7) is very helpful.

You can also use DigiGuide for your EPG data if you have a subscription (well worth it), but unfortunately the setup is even more convoluted (see here: http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/threads/confused-by-different-epg-types-use-digiguide.104010/). At least you should only have to do it the once... :)

Any chance of a bit of help please

Download and configure Digiguide with all the channels you require.

Download and unpack DG2XML.rar

Copy the "xmltv.dgscheme-web" folder in its entirety into your "C:\Program Files\DigiGuide TV Guide\schemes\server skins" folder

From the DigiGuide application select Tools->Customize

Click on Webservice and in the dialog that appears check 'Enable Web Service' and set a password you know.

Start XMLTV GUI

Select Tools->Settings

From the 'Global Settings' tab
Set the filename to save listings to, I use E:\EPG\TVGuide.xml

Click the 'Grabbers' tab

Tick the 'UK_Digi' Grabber and optionally move this to the top of the list.

Highlight the 'UK_Digi' Grabber and click the settings button

The first box should be filled correctly with the DigiGuide webservice connection info

http://localhost:2402/

Eneter the password you set in the DigiGuide application in the second box and click OK

Click OK again to get back to the main XMLTV GUI screen and click 'Grab Listings'

This should then start downloading the data and when finished you will have a TVGuide.xml in the folder you specified.

Done the bit in bold, but what the hell is xmltv GUI? I'm assuming media portal has been updated substantially since 2011 and thus this part has changed /moved.
