I know Bradford doesn't have a great reputation but can anyone who lives there or knows it well recommend the better areas to live in? What's the city centre like?

Lol. I live in Bradford, don't move here, you will dislike it.

If you like Asians, Europeans and not many British people then come!

Otherwise try Leeds. :)

If you must live in Bradford live right on the edges - my auntie lives in Clayton which is nice and there's Queensbury which is... OK...

Birkenshaw, Wyke and Thornton are fine too.

Stay clear of Lidget Green. Sadly my grandma lives there. Has lived there for 50 years and doesn't want to move even though most parts of Lidget Green are regularly on fire.

Lidget Green's sign:

Whoever thought of that slogan needs shooting!

Lidget Green lol BD7. Stay clear.

BD9 is quite nice depending on the area you live in as it is quite a large post-code. BD15 is also quite nice.

Shipley/Saltaire are lovely, but closer to the city centre, the crappier it is imo.

Bradford isn't that bad imo, it wasn't even that bad when the riots were kicking off and I was at University there. That said, I couldn't tell you where the nice areas are as I spent most of my time around the University area. I'd personally be looking outside the city at places like Bingley or Ilkley.

Edit: lol lived in Lidget Green in my second year.

There are some nice areas in Bradford. Like pretty much any city in England...it has its fair share of dumps. Don't think it's quite as bad as it's made out to be, there are definitely worse places to live.

Where my grandma lives in Lidget Green, everyone on the street had all moved in 50+ years ago when they got married, had raised families there, it was a lovely little cul-de-sac. Even when I was younger it was still nice.

Then people started dying off/moving out into flats and suchlike, and large Asian families started moving in. Then she got a known drug dealer move onto the street so there's police there all the time, and her next door neighbour seems to buy every house that comes up for sale on the street and move brothers/sisters/cousins into the houses. It'll soon be a street pretty much made up of one family and they all have very loud and massive get-togethers next door.

My grandma is kind of torn - she loves her house and it's the house she always lived in with my granddad till he died, but she feels now that she needs to move for both safety and sanity.

Just looked up where I used to live in Lidget Green on Google Streetview - looks like it's changed for the worse :( There used to be really nice pub there, can't remember what it was called but it was the sort of place you could take your gran for Sunday lunch. I remember a few years back it was on the news as a riot broke out there which was absolutely bizarre as it was not a rough place at all. Now an Asian supermarket...

Thanks everyone. I'll check out all the suggestions.

What's Halifax like?

Lived there for 5 years till last year when I moved to Huddersfield. Went to school in Halifax too.

Halifax is pretty similar really - nice bits, horrible bits. On the whole nicer than Bradford though.

Nice places to look - Mount Tabor, Southowram, Northowram, Savile Park, Bell Hall, Norton Tower, Warley, Shelf, Wainstalls, Hipperholme, Stump Cross.

OK places - Boothtown, town centre, Salterhebble, Siddal.

AVOID - Ovenden, Mixenden, Pellon, King Cross, Illingworth.

Would personally recommend Savile Park and Mount Tabor - I've lived in both. Savile Park closer to town and amenities though. Mount Tabor much more rural (on the top of the hill, foggy and snowy in winter!)

Also near Halifax - may I recommend Brighouse? The town of my childhood and a nice little town. :D

I come from Bradford originally and class it as my home town - come from the BD9 area. It's OK, nothing to be amazed at.

I'd say if you want to be relatively close to the city centre, live in Saltaire. It has a brilliant history and is quite a scenic place. Bad stuff doesn't seem to go on down there, some really friendly people around.

Getting more out to the outer suburbs, Wilsden or Howarth are also nice area of Bradford that I recommend. Peaceful and nice. So try:

Saltaire
Wilsden
Howarth
Keighley
Skipton
Guiseley
Ilkley

Bingley, Shipley, Haworth, Cullingworth, Wilsden and Cottingley are really some nice areas off the top of my head. Then you have Ilkley and Otley on the outskirts. City centre ain't bad either.
