Women tend to fall into bad eating habits and put on weight when they live with men, a study has claimed.

However, men seem to become healthier and eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat after they begin co-habiting with their partners, according to dieticians from Newcastle University.

In a review of seven previous studies the Newcastle team found women's diets increased in fat and sugar and they tended to start eating creamier, heavier dishes like rich pasta dishes and curries.

The dieticians suggested this happened because couples tried to please each other by changing their diets.

One of the studies suggested men naturally preferred a high-fat diet whereas women tended to choose, healthier, low-fat options. However, this division seemed to blur when people entered into relationships.

One of the studies, which involved 9,043 US adults, found marriage itself was the cause of weight gain in women - when women left their marriages they lost weight.

The authors said this could happen because married women had less time to exercise and watch their eating habits.

Study author Dr Amelia Lake said: "You can't just blame an unhealthy lifestyle or diet on your partner, as there are many other things that affect what you eat and do. However, research has shown that your partner is a strong influence on lifestyle and people who are trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.

"Couples who move into together should use the opportunity of the honeymoon period to make positive changes to their diet and lifestyle by working together and supporting each other.

"But couples who have been in their relationships for longer should remember that it is never too late to make changes and again this needs team work."

The study was published in the journal Complete Nutrition.

Just something for you boys to bare in mind when you're complaining about how she's "put on a few pounds" :p

It's not the men that are making them over eat.

You're right, it's not.

It's us being too loving and caring and wanting to make you boys happy that makes girls gain weight! :p

I'm am trying bloody hard to get back to where I was, I've cut out eating some of the things that I love, watching what I'm eating and pushing myself at the gym so don't ******* tell me I don't give a crap what I look like and I've left myself go

Don't worry Piggy - we both know most of them don't have a clue about women anyway! :p

Well I certainly wasn't expecting this thread to run sour this quickly.

For what it's worth I'm sorry if I've caused any offence to any women reading this thread, but my comments were jokes and I made that clear with smilies.

Me neither :(

And good! :p

Well since this thread has turned more serious than fun...

When I'm single I dress for me - I actually make less effort and dress comfortably.

I tend to make more effort, get dressed up more etc when I'm dating someone. :)

I'd say women got fat when they got married, because of all the extra protein.

You know what I'm talking about :D

Is that what it is?! Well then - now we know how to lose that extra weight with ease! :D

*senses imminent thread slide into depravity*

Edit: Too late! :D

Yeah... well lets get back on topic then.

We should be less willing to please and stop doing all those things for our new partners that make us gain weight :D

Who's buying these magazines that perpetuate the stereotype though? It's mainly the women, so maybe if people stopped buying magazines that made them hate their own bodies they'd be in a better state of mind when it comes to their own size.

I don't tend to buy these magines but they are often around the house. You'll see that the mags that perpetuate the stereotype are selling so much because they all claim to tell you how you can become part of that stereotype too!

Realistically though it is very hard to get that figure, and when women fail they feel worse for it :(
