LLU/BE questions

So I am currently with Orange and am thinking of moving to BE.

I have done a quick search to try and find the closest Exchange to me which is currently this one:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/ESFML

From what I can see this Exchange seems to be pretty **** poor.

I know from where I live and having checked BE's website there is an Exchange here: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/ESMOR which is still pretty close to my house. This seems to be a lot better connection and seems like a better quality of line, am I able to phone BE and select that as my Exchange or am I stuck with the one above?

Fast responses appreciated :)

You're stuck with the exchange you have. Do you actually know which exchange you're connected to, or are you just guessing?

I phoned Orange up and they said the first link is my closest one, I don't actually know if this is the one I am with. But would assume so. I'm currently searching for a website to find out which exchange I am on.

Kay, entered my number. using the 1st link as the exhange. Sucks.
Looks like I am stuck with Orange then. :(

I'm assuming Orange aren't using LLU since it says its not being used on this exchange.

Eh? The first one shows as being enabled for Be/O2, isn't that who you want to go with?

Yeah but the line has been checked and the max is apparently 6mb or does this not matter if LLU is used?

I should probably post full story. *tired today*

Orange quoting me up to 8meg currently getting 6meg. This is what the Orange guy had said is my max.

Checked BE website said I can get around 16meg out of the 24meg package. I haven't phoned them yet re: this.

It depends on your line length and the thickness and quality of the material it's made of.

You're already using an LLUer (not that it has any effect on the speed you get) - BT Wholesale. There are plenty of providers who also use BT Wholesale and aren't Orange though...

Edit: The difference is that O2/Be use ADSL2+, while Orange are only using ADSL.

Be/o2 said I could get up to 13meg on my line.I get around 10.It's still better than the 4meg i'd have got with sky.And o2 upload is much better than sky too.
If you can be/o2 i'd go with them.o2 are slightly cheaper than be as well.
I can't recommend o2 enough:cool:

You're not comparing like for like though, as Orange is an up-to 8mb ADSL service and Be is up-to 24mb ADSL2+.

Check yourself. Find your stats, plug them into a line speed estimator and see what kind of speeds you could expect with ADSL2+.

There's no attenuation given there. The rest of the numbers you've entered are right, though Orange evidently spun you a line - there's no reason you couldn't have been if not at full rate then nearer it than 6880kbps.

You need to feed it an attenuation or you'll get weird results. 0dB isn't sensible, it should really throw an error at that...

It depends what router you're using, but if you restart it and it reconnects at 22dB you should be asking Orange to reset your target SNR margin.

It's an old D-Link DSL-G624M had it for years. Restarting it just now and will see what it comes up with.

Before restart Down = 15dB SNR @ 6880kbps and Up = 22dB SNR @ 448kbps
After restart Down = 15.5dB SNR @ 6720kbps and Up = 22dB SNR @ 448kbps

I'm being really stupid here, but the router isnt showing me the line attenuation, in the screen above so is there anyway to find this?

I've entered in the 15dB into the site but obviously since I dont have the attenuation I cant get an accurate reading.

Try a router which does?

Will have a hunt for the Livebox router which Orange gave me.

It may be the router that is slowing down my connection since its old. I cant even get the firmware from the D-Link website because they dont do it anymore.

Thanks for your patience and help so far. :)
