Is 76-79C (varied cores) acceptable for an i7 920? It's not clocked.

Just fitted a CM TX3 Evo and used some Cool Lab Liquid Metal CPU pads. Although I am unsure as to whether I put the pad on correctly, am I meant to put it on the HSF, or on the CPU itself and then close the LGA door shut on it?

Sounds high.
Would expect about 60c stock.
Vortez test had 38c above ambient with your cooler and CPU.

I use tube paste so no idea of install using Cool Lab Liquid Metal CPU pads.
I install CPU to motherboard first. Then apply a rice grain+ size dob of paste and set heatsink in place and tighten screws.

Sounds high for stock speeds. My 920 @ 3.6 on thermalright ultra 120 with 2 fans was mid 70's under full load (100% on all cores) and maybe low 40's idle.

I've swapped to a corsair H-100 (not running full speed fans) now and its low 30's idle and 60 under full load. On my heatsink I used paste but the H-100 I used the pad that was with it.

This is good advice and the temps seem about right. I had a dodgy stock cooler once and got 75c playing BF3. Fitted cheap cooler and temps dropped to 60c maxed out.
