Local Area Connection in Taskbar

Hello,

I've just switched from bt boradband to talktalk. My BT broadband modem was installed using the etehrnet connection. I've uninstalled that and installed the new talktalk modem which is USB. Now in my taskbar I have an icon similar to the dial-up icon with a red cross on it. When I move my mouse over it it says "local area connection. A network cable is unplugged" in the yellow box. I have disconnected the ethernet cable as I thought this would remove the icon in my taskbar but it's still there. Anyone know how I can remove it?

I've disabled it and the icon is now gone. I had previously unchecked both boxes "show icon in notification area when connected" and "notify me when this connection has no or limited connectivity" but these didn't remove it. Thanks for the replys. I was wondering though by default does Local Area Netowrk come disabled with a fresh windows installation? If not, how come now it displays the icon?

On the other hand, you are aware the modem you've got that did ethernet (which is considerably better than USB will ever be when it comes to modems) will work with Talktalk too?

Is it just a case of swapping the modems? TalkTalk uses dial-up to connect whereas the bt modem connected through lan so how do i reconfigure my dial-up?
