Wondering if someone can help.

My dad's computer seems to have a stange problem occuring.

He basically has a computer that uses a USB modem to connect to Talk Talk. All fine and no problems. The other day he decided in his wisdom that he would also try and install the software and usb modem on his new laptop. He couldn't get it to work and thus went to just plug everything back into his desktop pc. However, all of a sudden when you boot windows, it comes up with "local area network cable is not plugged in" down in the bottom right corner.

I have tried reinstalling the Broadcom 440X 10/100 drivers, nothing, i have tried uninstalling all the related software for talk talk and then reinstalling etc. All still have the same error message and do not allow him to connect to the internet.

The modem is connected via USB. Also tried changing the cables (USB and telephone line) and also the filters etc but all seems in vain.

He has changed no settings etc.

Any ideas?

(apart from telling him to get a wireless router next time!!! )

Local Area Network cable not connected, whilst using a USB modem?!? Is the modem indicating it's connected to the internet? Re-plug the USB modem when the computer is on, see if it detects it?

yeah it detects (tried different usb slots also). When you connect to USB, it shows the power light on, and ADSL light on, but then flicks on and off when you get in windows due to the LAN issue. It's a standalone pc.

Perhaps you need to re-configure the modem itself, as you tried the modem on another computer with another MAC address. Seems to me the modem is no longer connecting to the internet for some reason. You may have upset it's internal settings by reinstalling and using it on the other machine.

considered that myself - however, this LAN disconnected icon appears now ever without the USB modem being plugged in. It never did before!! Dad's and computers are a bad mix!! :p

The LAN thing is a layer on top of your USB connection, and only connected when the modem is connected to the net. It would appear if your modem is unplugged or not connecting. Best check your settings (IP, VMU, etc.) on your router to make sure it's all the same as before.

re-installing the software and using the modem on the other computer may have reset the settings.
