Local connection but no Internet

Hi there,

This one has me stumped. I closed my laptop last night having used the internet fine.

I open it up today and it is connection to the router (apparently), but the router is not giving it an IP address (a proper one like: 192.168.1.....).

When I open vista Network/Sharing Center crap, it shows that the connection to the router is fine but not to the internet.

I can't see any of the computers on the network either.

It is wireless connection.

I have tried resetting the router to no avail. I have tried manually setting IP address to no avail.

Whats wrong?

Thanks.

1) do start run cmd. Once then type ipconfig /release and then type ipconfig /renew

Type just ipconfig on its own next. What address does it give you ? you need to make sure you can still contact the DHCP of the router and arent using an IP that hasnt expired

2) try a ping test. In the same command prompt window. Type ping www.yahoo.co.uk and see if it comes back, if not, type ping 217.12.3.11 and see if that comes back. If the first one times out, but the latter comes back, its a DNS problem.

when i tried ipconfig /release is said this:

Winodws Ip Configuration

An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified.

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation.

EDIT:

OK wtf....it seems to be working now? Anyone know what happend?

ipconfig /renew will try to get a new DHCP lease for every interface - some won't work, but somewhere along the line I'd guess your wireless card did work.

yeah sounds like you tryed to release an IP address on one of the adapters you dont use

is the internet working again now btw ?

ipconfig /release then icponfig /renew is usually the first thing i do in scenarios like this :)
