How much of a performance impact are you likely to have?

drives in question are HDDs

would the answer be the same if it were SSD?

is it mainly seek time which is affected?

Depends on the rest of the traffic on the 1GB LAN. You talking about small files here or large files been transferred? You have USB 2.0 and USB 3.x so transfer rate speeds are different.

there isn't much traffic on the LAN and I have also used multiple switches to separate media devices and "office" devices so that shouldn't be an issue.

The drive im thinking of moving and mapping is mainly used to run emulators and sometimes virtual machines

i guess an android emulator (NOX) is the thing that will be used the most
