Hi all,

I want to start a new project and have to choose between hosting the website in my homelab or going to the cloud.

Regarding to the cloud, I have had a few suggestions: hetzner.com, vultr.com, 0ping.eu and contabo.com

What do you think? Is there any big advantage in going to the cloud? Or can the website perform well on a server at home.

Also what do you think, can Windows be as performant as Linux machine for web hosting?

Thanks and happy new year!

Regards,
Adisson

How are you going to be coding the website?
How much upload speed do you have at home?
Do you have a backup solution?
Do you have a server on a UPS?
Have you calculated electricity costs vs free in the cloud?
Are you going to be needing a database of some sort?

Most web servers are fine depends if you have experience on managing that web server technology or not.

PS This would have been better in this section.

Probably the most imporant part is what security are you willing to set up and maange.
your potentiall opening your network to threats.

tbh i'd go with the "Go Cloud" option. its simplifies your set up and doesnt expose you to threats.

if you want to try self hostings maybe look in to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, they have a free tiar thats pretty good, but requires you to do all the set up.

Hey there! It's great to hear that you're looking to set up a gaming server for your community. When it comes to hosting games like Rust, Minecraft, and Arma, you'll definitely want to make sure you have a server with plenty of resources and a solid internet connection. One option to consider is to buy VPS, which can give you the control and flexibility you need to run your games smoothly.
