Im about to roll out active directory in my home for testing and management purposes, we have 3 pc's in the house and 2 laptops which i would like to be added to a domain, i have a server which will be acting as a domain controller and running active directory for a number of reasons.

The server will be used as a central storage point, file server, used to tighten security, for regular backups, a vpn server so i can access my home network at work and a download console.

I will also be using it as a testing centre because of the work i do i will be looking into and implementing new features so i learn them for work.

Problem is, lack of storage space for the server, at the moment its located in my room and it can get abit annoying with the cpu fan, but i was thinking of locating the server in my loft.

All i am worrying about is the heat in the summer, will it be too much? would like to know if anyone runs their server in the loft.

It should be fine. More specs would be helpful (more specifically the CPU), older chips tend to be able to take more heat, where as newer chips tend to give off less heat to begin with. (I'm sure you're aware that this is because of the measurement of the core's in nanometres)

Spec as below:

p3 900mhz
aopen motherboard
384mb ram
geforce 4 graphics card
350w psu
200gb hdd

Currently running Windows 2000 Advanced server, although my old hdd just died in it which is why im starting to get of my *** and get this domain controller rolled out, i was planning on doing it but i didnt know when..

Now i know :p

p3's don't get that hot, you should be fine. Don't forget to chuck some case fans in if it doesn't have any though. 10£ is worth the piece of mind and a few less travels to the loft every year.

kk sames lol but i dont have much experience with server stuff windows side lol so will be an experience :p prob a few nights of "WHY ARENT YOU WORKING???" lol

Would'nt do it to be honest, especially since summers around the corner sort of, lofts get REALLY hot and hardware survival is questionable, even with high CFM case fans up the wazoo it won't matter since the ambient temp would be mad hot anyhow. Had a PIII server in my loft a few yrs back and even with a delta black label 7000rpm screamer and fop38 sink it used to crash often in the heat, the case was excellently cooled. I think the hard drives eventually died (60gb or so, big back then!) and i just gave up after that.
