Hi all, hopefully I'm in the right section! After googling for a popular UK forum I have found you (pretty sure I've been on here before for PC advice years ago) I come to ask for some general advice from anyone kind enough to be willing to share some of their experience with me as I'm sure there must be a wealth of it on here.

In a nut shell, I'm in my late 20's and lived in the South East all my life. I can't understate how much of a **** hole I think it is - namely Essex, Kent & London. I think it's overpopulated, unfriendly, chavvy, anti-social, expensive and just awful in so many ways - and I have not enjoyed anything about living there so far. To be frank about it, this year I came into some money and I want to drastically relocate to another part of England but there's only so many episodes of Escape to the Country I can watch without feeling like I'm back to square one. Ultimately I'm not at all well traveled within the UK and I'm looking for some suggestions for nice places in England to live.

I'm definitely looking for somewhere with more green space and avoiding similar cities and suburbs (Birmingham, Manchester etc.), but I would like to live not too far from some pubs, restaurants etc (but hopefully avoiding a chav style high street or town centre - is that even possible now?). I've been drawn to Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire & Norfolk for now but still don't really know much more than that. I'm also single with not a lot of friends or close family so I don't want to seclude myself too much.

I went to Lincolnshire recently and I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly and laid back people were compared to where I'm from, so this is the kind of environment I'm looking for. I like the feel of old historic towns but can not really tell whether they would be as nice as they seem.

If you know any places (however specific or vague) that you think fit the bill I would be most grateful for any suggestions for me to look at. Thanks in advance!

Wow so many great replies, thank you all for your insights. I'll be spending some time having a browse online at all of the many places mentioned (except Milton Keynes perhaps) and later tonight or tomorrow respond to some questions that were aimed my way. Thanks again.

Also I appreciate as others have mentioned that everyone has their own idea of what is nice, but to just hear the names of some places with some brief insight to begin my own research is a big help. I shan't be buying a house just based off of one persons ideas!

Looking at houses in Devon which has been mentioned a couple of times and many of them are absolutely gorgeous, on houses alone it's winning me over. Only houses I've seen in Oxfordshire seem to compare so far. I may have to visit, covid permitting, and try and see what it's really about. You only seem to hear nice things about Devon.

Not sure if this post is serious but just in case:
You say that you are in your "late 20's" and now have "Loadsamoney" but don't give any indication as to what you do with your life day to day.
You say that you are single with few friends and no close family but want to live near to Pubs and Restautants.
I believe that the North of England is much more open and welcoming than the South - and certainly than is the South East.
Frankly your "issues" may not be resolved by relocating, you may well still end up disappointed.

I gave as much info as I felt was required/I wanted to share. You don't know until you try - such is life. :)
