bascially, once a day vista locks up. the songs im playign start to start and stop, and i ahev to wait about 10mins for it to finish. i can just bout get to the task manager within 5 mins, but even shutting off explorer.exe and restarting it has no affect. and system idle proccesses go into the 90's for CPU usage.

atm i have an E2140 OCed to 3.2GHz.

should i put a fresh install of vista down?

If so how would i do it w.o loosing all my files? i have only one 320GB HDD, and all my installations storgae etc are on there. and i dont have ny spare DVDs to burn.

ALSO, if i jsut get an OS drive or partition this with about 20GB jsut for vista, can i have my docs, program files, music videos, pictures ETC (storage and installations) on the other drive? so if i need ot reinstall vista, all the games and proggies will still be there?

Can't help with your problem.

But if you create a seperate partition on your hard drive for Vista (c: ) and another for your files (d: ). When you reinstall Vista, just install to the same partition (c: ) and all of your files on d: will be fine.

I'd recommend setting the partition to more than 20GB for Vista though. My Windows folder alone is 10GB and that's without any programs or games.

Hm, interesting one. I am a little suspicious something updating is causing it, or a general software conflict. Try removing all internet security software. Also, use msconfig to remove all 3rd party software from startup, same goes for all 3rd party services.

As the problem is reproducible within a day, it should be fairly quick to see if what I have mentioned sorts out the problem.

I have a few other ideas to do with your h/w and overclock but rather than me eloborate on them, see how this one goes first.

A couple of other things, when you say "system idle proccesses go into the 90's for CPU usage", system idle is the percentage free rather than in use, your CPU is NOT under 90% load at this point in time, only 10% under load. Also, if you are sceptical of loosing your internet security software, don't be. Just don't download / install anything for the time being.

since i have overclocked it from 375 on the FBS to 410, i havent had the lock up for a day.

i am thinking of installing vista 64bit, so maybe ill give that a shot and see if it still happens.
