Morning Dudes and Dudettes,

I've been handed a laptop to try and fix, it belongs to a family member.

The fault they had with it was, when booting into Windows the screen would go black / random colours / reboot, one of those things.
This only happened when booting into Windows, so I assumed Gfx driver, however they said they hadn't updated anything on the laptop in ages. (possible windows update?)

However, when bring the laptop back to my place to try and fix it, I didn't get this problem at all. But, the C:\ driver, is inaccessible from any account on the laptop when trying to access the drive through My Computer. I receive an 'Access Denied' msg. I can however type 'C:\' into the address bar any gain access fine....

The Recycle Bin also appears to be trashed. According to CCleaner, there's 2GB of stuff in the Bin, however I can't empty it cause it appears empty.
I created a test folder, deleted it, and it didn't appear in the Bin.

The Bin is switched on in (not set to perm delete files straight away.)

I've re-applied the permissions on the entire C:\ drive. Didn't work.
Booting into Safe Mode returns all the same faults above.

Spy Bot didn't find anything, AVG found nothing. I've ended all the 'unusual' tasks.

CCleaner doesn't find even 1 'out of place' registry key to delete, which is strange.

Any ideas? I'm thinking of installing Kaspersky on it to do a scan. Really don't want to have to format it if I can avoid it like.

I haven't.

It's got XP Media Centre Edition on it, I'm guessing I can't use an XP Pro disc to do the repair? If not I'll have to see if he still has the CD!

Never thought of that Sp00n ^^, good thinking.

Does system restore just back the state of the registry, or will media files etc be lost as well?
