Locking someone out of Windows?

I think you run some sort of background logging program to track what sites he visits (undoubtably porn) then use the information to blackmail him into not using the computer again.

Either that or key logger and find out his facebook password then hold that to ransom. Problem solved. :p

If he knows the password and doesn't change it then the keylogger thing could be a possible idea how he is doing it.

If she comes back to the machine and the password has changed to a different one then a password reset disc or a program like ERD commander may be doing it. You can boot up off the CD and then reset a windows password and doesn't require the windows password reset disk!

If you want this stopped, edit the BIOS to make the CD the second bootable device and make the hard disk top. Then set a bios password so it can't be changed.

Alternative is just to set a startup password as others have mentioned. This would lock anything from being used before the machine even tries to boot up. Some machines can't have their BIOS password reset though even if the battery is taken out these days so if it's forgotten you're screwed. I don't know if startup passwords can lock you out though after X amount of attempts?

Another alternative is use something like Truecrypt to encrypt the hard drive and set a boot up password. Then even if he managed to access the computer via a bootup CD the hard drive is encrypted \o/

Or the method I would use is to simply say "F OFF" and don't use the machine. I would have hoped someone in my own family would have enough respect NOT to use the machine if I asked them to let alone reset the windows password.

I vote you put a hidden camera in the shower and send the photos round his school. He'll no doubt run away from home and the problem is then sorted.

he's probably just brute-forcing the microsoft SAM file where the password is stored. it's a relatively trivial process if you have the right software and a good rainbow-table.

or just a tiny rainbow table if she keeps setting short, simple, dictionary-based passwords...

Thanks for all the replies guys! He's not really using the computer now we've blocked Runescape and he is going a bit crazy! Banging and shouting and everything :O.

Thanks again, will refer back to this thread if we need to try something else.

Just an update on this; he figured out that it was the .hosts file causing the problem and re-named it. So I put a piece of software on that can make certain files read only. Now he can't edit, delete or re-name the file, so he's pretty stuck :).

He knows it was me that blocked it however and he doesn't seem very happy. He's also twice my size *gulp*.
