Long story short
My mothers Vauxhal Zafira needs a tyre replaced but she does'nt have the locking wheel nut socket.

She rang the dealers with not much help other than you need the code on the box of the socket for a replacement.

Im looking for the cheapest option of removing and replacing the wheel nuts.

Few options I have thought of.

  • Buy a tool which cost £14 to remove such nuts but very fiddly and nut can get stuck in tool and replaces nuts.
  • Take to a garage which specialise in tyres and get them to break off and replace nuts

  • Do vauxhal have master sockets ??? if so pay the large sum they will no dout charge for someone to take the nuts off and put new ones on

Below is the profile of the nut.

If the outer part of that nut doesn't spin, buy 4x 18mm ~ (Or appropriate size) sockets, and a club hammer and bash them onto the nut, then remove. Has worked for me on several occasions.

If this fails, try your local Kwikfit or similar.

They've probably got plenty of experience in taking them off without the key.

Just take it to a tyre place, I'm sure they deal with this problem all day long and will be able to whip them off no problem.

Take it to Kwik fit etc. I'd buy some new nuts/bolts before you go though as I doubt they'll have spares. I take it there's one on each wheel?

it spins.

It can be a right pain to get off, I even called the AA and they came with one of these http://www.dynomec.co.uk/indexEnglish.html and they wouldn't budge.:(

I'd be tempted to try and buy the key off ebay - they come with a picture and you should find yours.

I have the same problem with her new Peugeot. How much are replacement keys from the dealers or is it cheaper to buy 4 new locking wheel nuts and have a tyre place force them off?

If its anything like the locking wheel nut on the Astras, I used long nose very sturdy pliers and managed to get them off.

The ones that come standard on renaults, is another thing. Some idiot used an air gun to put them on. Needless to say they are now ruined and is some of the alloys trying to get them off.

I just avoid locking wheel nuts now, if someone wants to steal your alloys - they will.

^ locking nuts are fine just dont need to be done up with air guns :(
Luckily never encoutered this problem but i would prolly drill the head off then hopefully enough thread to get some stillsons on or would be easy outs :D
