Lockup Problems

Hoping you guys can help me trace the cause of an intermittent.. but several times a day.. problem.. namely complete lockups.

I've re-installed XP, cleaned/reseated inside so ruled out those.

She's not overclocked.

X2 3800+
HD3850 ATI
2gig Geil Ram
SATA HDD
Running on 939 so DDR1 not AM2.

Been running fine for 2 years, started to lockup in the last couple of months.

Memtest seems to show clear, no faults with HDD..

I'm worried we're looking at the mobo or cpu but bit rusty of what's available to try to eliminate those two because if it is them then I'm obviously facing replacing ram/cpu/cooler/mobo - unless I can find a 939 mobo.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

I suffer the same fate, random lock-ups on desktop. Oddly, it never occurs whilst gaming. Anyway, send the mobo back RMA if possible.

Have you tried a different psu? I've had problems like yours in the past and resolved them by investing in a decent psu ;)

SW.

Try running Orthas Prime to test the CPU only by running a Gromac core and then a blend which tests memory as well. This will detemine if the problem is CPU or CPU/Memory related.

Try the memory in different memory combinations and banks. If it works in one bank but not he other, it could be the memory controller on the AMD chip has failed, rather than the memory or the CPU itself.

As for the PSU, I'm not convinced tbh, I'm sure it's fine for the spec you listed but in depends on other items like HDDs, opticals and fans etc.. Disconnect what you can (i.e. non bott HDDs, optical drives and some fans etc..) and see if the problem goes. If it does, then the draw is too much and you'll need a higher rated PSU.

PSU I'm sure isn't the fault. The randomness of the problem and fact I've reduced load recently ( HD3850 using less power than the X1800XT ) would seem to discount that. PSU is also a quality device so whilst it's power may look low on paper it's rails are generally strong.

CPU only test ran for 30 mins no problems.

Running a blend test at the moment.

Another vote for psu if random lockups during non load situations.

Quality psu true but try a diff one just to be sure and rule it out 100%

Before worrying about actually changing PSU's Figured I'd fire up PC Probe.

Without any 3D stuff running she's reporting voltages all solid :-
1.33 vcore
3.38
5.25
12.04
CPU 44degC
MB 28degC

Firing up POTBS see's them not really change at all (5v drops abou 0.1v if that). Even CPU only warms up a little.
