Hi

I'm going to be a lodger. The landlady has a BT line and is happy for me to get broadband.

If she is happy, as a lodger, can I order a broadband package in my name at her house? I want to be billed and I don't want her to be affected at all.

can I do this?

Thanks

pete

thanks, would be grateful if someone else would confirm this too.

I want to reassure the landlady that there's no way she would become liable for any costs because of me. if my name is on the contract, can they go after her if I didn't pay or dropped dead or something like that? Don't want to cause any issues for her.

thanks.

The other thing is that according to the BT wholesale availability checker, the line may need some work. Is there any danger at all BT could demand money from me or the landlady if the line needed to be sorted out b4 we got broadband? I don't want her or me to get a huge bill for line work because I request BB. She has a working BT landline already.

Here is what the availability checker says

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 3.5Mbps or greater.

The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.
Note: You will be able to receive a Broadband service but could experience a slightly longer product delivery time, typically within 10 days as your telephone line running from your premises will need to be changed to enable this (a process referred to as 'de-DACS'). In some rare instances BT may need to undertake significant engineering work to provide service that could further extend the product delivery time (up to around 40 days is possible, but rare). An estimated service delivery time will be provided to your Broadband Provider following a site survey.

As said in your other thread, you aren't going to be charged for DACS removal - you'll either get an ADSL service with a delay (but no charge), or you'll get nothing.

Unless you go with one of the BT Retail ISPs, no charge should ever appear on the bill for the voice service. It should always go via the ISP.
