Loft Boarding - Additional supports question...

Hi All

Having fairly recently moved house, and having had the spare room stacked to the ceiling with boxes, I really want to crack on and board the loft to give me some storage space.

I've done this before in our last place, so know what I'm doing re boards etc but I have a quick question. due to the shape of the house, or more accurately the roof, which rather than a simple slope to the front and rear and a flat side wall, also has a slope to the side, there are addtional rafters and joists in the corners which are raised above the height of the rest of the joists.

To maximise the space I can board I was wondering, if it would be ok to screw some 2x2 or something similar to the side of the raised joist so the top is level with the joists, to enable me to continue the oard right across rather than having to stop a joist short thus missing out on a whole strip of potential storage area?

Side on Pic to explain: Black rectangles are joists, Blue is the boarding, red is what I'm asking if it's ok to add so I can board all the way across the area.

Does that make sense? If not i'll try to draw an illustration when I get a minute...

Any help/thoughts much appreciated.

Yes that's fine (in my non roofing engineers opinion).

Just in passing while I think about it,
you are not supposed to do the same thing when say building a deck, because you'd be relying on the shear strength of the screws, hence different technique and use of lag bolts etc.

Yes you can, I've used 2x1 in the past.

When you laid the boards, it' better to cut & stagger the boards.

To be honest that is a bit of a simplifiewd diagram, In actual fact the boards I'm using fit across 3 of the joists, so will be a separate piece across the rest of the space, so I can cut a load then alternate which side rthe short board is.

I will hopefully get a good bit done this weekend!

Won't be huge amounts of weight up there, just the usual household stuff, anf as I'm going to be able to board a good area it'll be spread pretty well too.

That will be fine. As long as you put plenty of 4" screws in you'll be fine. Can even use 2x1 if you want. Just don't pack excessive weight there.

If he using T&G chipboard staggering the boards will give additional strength & rigidity.

Just screw sawn/ rough 2x1 to each side of the joist, what with a 2" joist, it gives you 4" plenty of support.
