So I'm looking to increase my current loft hatch which isn't very big and has no fixed ladder, to move to a larger hatch that will have a fixed folding wooden ladder for easier access to take things up and down from the loft as needed. I can see most 3 way folding ladders (all in one) are 700mm x 1200mm, and so that would be the ideal target, however the loft joist are quite close together. I was planning to follow this approach https://www.insulationsuperstore.co...nd-roofing/loft-ladders-hatches-buyers-guide/ but I'm very unsure if I could cut a third joist to create the required aperture or not?

The hatch is currently over the landing which is preferred by not central in the loft, to do that I'd need to move it to the other side of the supporting bedroom wall with the same layout, but keen to keep it out of a bedroom if possible. There isn't fantastic clearance to the left purlin, but I think it would be workable.

Diagrams aren't fully to scale, but more to illustrate. The photo shows the large beam that sits over the joists, with the purlin positioned higher up on the support walls.

You could do option 2, but you'd need to double up the two end joists which your proposed doubles are joining onto. Also bolt the doubles together and use some jiffy type joist hangers
