I was wondering how hard it is to put in a power socket in the loft. I have an aerial booster that requires a power supply and dont want to run a cable through the ceiling.

Anyone done it before and could you tell me of your experience, good or bad?

Thanks

I think its illegal to do DIY, you need a pro to do it for you.

Maybe im wrong but thats what i thought, espesh the loft.

if you got loft lights, surely you could power it off the feed to the loft lights, speak to a pro though

No, it will need to come off the ring main to be safe. Just need a junction box, appropriate cable and a double socket. Done them live before now but DON'T try that as it will end in tears. . . . So you will also need a torch for when you turn the mains off.:D

I think I will wait then by the response. My little brother is an electrician but he lives the other end of the country. He said that he would do it and said it was simple enough, but I guess ill wait until he visits to be safe.

Thanks for the advice tho guys

You should have/should exchange your booster for a masthead type booster. These take a power supply through the aerial cord so you buy a transformer part which sits somewhere convenient (behind TV) and mount the masthead amp as near to the aerial as you can, as is ideal. No extra wiring required!

Find the nearest socket on a ring main and see if you can wire to that; (ring, not spur) if you don't know what we're talking about, get a pro'.

Sounds like you need to get a pro' anyway so .... DON'T TAKE CHANCES, get it done right.

kind regards.

There is no issue with powering the amplifier off of the lighting ring. It's a typical method of doing so.

Some people fit a lamp socket in the attic (3 round pins), this is to prevent someone from plugging in an arc welder (into a regular socket) and trip the lights. This is quite a nice way of doing it. Wiring it directly into a lighting junction box or pendant also works fine.

Alternatively fit an FCU and put a 3a fuse in it.

In an ideal world you would have a single socket off of the ring main in the attic but usually this isn't possible.

Agree, no need to use 30 amp ring main for a dedicated booster feed. Just spur off the lighting circuit for 2nd floor that will be easily accessible in loft, maybe just fit a switched / fused spur in loft so booster is hard wired in.
