One for all the plumbers/diy'ers out there :)

Been having trouble with hot water dribbling out of the taps so I checked the loft tank and it was empty. Plumber came next day and said ballcock was buggered and needed replacing. He replaced it and all back to working again.

However, when the tank is filling I can now hear it whereas I've never heard the tank fill before in the 12 years I've lived here. It's like the sound you get when the toilet is refilling after a flush, no noise from pipes just from the tank. It lasts for about a minute when I've had a shower but far longer when the Mrs has had a bath.

I mentioned the noise to the plumber when he was here as the tank was re-filling and he said that it was normal even though I told him I'd never heard the tank fill before. Is this normal? The tank is right above my office room so it's a bit annoying. I've searched online and found answers ranging from wrong valve fitted to scale in the water.

Please bare in mind when replying that when it comes to this sort of thing I'm thick as mince so try not to be too technical :)

It's likely that the reason you've never heard it before is that the ballcock was already knackered, and was only letting a tiny trickle drop in to the tank.

If it's annoying, I would imagine there's something you can do to reduce the flow so it's less noisy. Or even put some sort of angled baffle in so the flow is hitting that before the surface of the water.

We're talking about the cold water tank in the loft which fills the immersion tank right?

Yep, the cold water tank.

The plumber did say that it might have been going for a while which is why I couldn't hear it but lived here 12 years and can't ever remember hearing it fill up. Must be the longest ballcock death scene ever :)

It's early days and it might clear up so guess I'll see how it goes, not going to mess with it.

Back when I had a tank it would fill more-or-less as quickly as the water was leaving the tank. The level never dropped far enough to needs an extended refilling. As it was filling while the taps were running you never noticed the additional noise.

Has the new ball valve reduced the water flow and increased the fill time so you're now noticing it? You shouldn't be able to run the taps fast enough to empty the header tank.
