Logitech G Series Keyboards

Hi guys,

Last night I figured it'd be a good idea to pour a pint of coke over my trusty Logitech media keyboard which has served me well for years. It still works but... its not the same.

I was going to just buy another one but they dont seem to do it anymore and the similar 'media keyboard' Logitech now offer looks a bit ****.

So I'm thinking of a G19 or a G510.

Are they worth the money? Whats the application support like for the screen? Does it work in BF3 yet?

Also I notice it supports Teamspeak 3. I can see how this would work on the colour screen on the G19 but how does it work on the G510's monochrome screen?

Or should I buy something else and not waste a hundred quid on a keyboard?

I note the G19 has been out for almost 3 years. This seems an absolute age. Am I going to buy it only to find the all new super amazing G20 comes out 30 seconds after I get it?

i have used the g510 on bf3 for 4 months and i would say:

- the changing backlight thing is a complete gimmick
- the keys feel a bit mushy
- i didnt use the macro keys whatsoever (what would one use them for in bf3?)
- the screen was useful for watching cpu and ram, but im indifferent about not having it
- the volume scroll wheel is useful
- the audio port extensions are useful (bare in mind when you plug/unplug the audio the keyboard restarts and the computer sees it as a virtual sound card)

I moved from the g510 to a filco majestouch with mx browns and i have not looked back ever since, the g510 felt like a bit of a toy in hindsight

imho: get a mechanical board

I had a G510 and the retractable legs on the back are made of ****. One snapped after about a week. If you don't use them Its one of the better keyboards ive used. If you do use them i would say its only a matter of time till one snaps. You have to RMA the whole thing. Total ball ache. it would cost pence to have a single solid bit rather than the tri pronged flimsy thing.

The Logitech G series boards are overpriced and beyond the obvious novelty of the screens and the dubious value of the extra buttons ....they are just mediocre keyboards, all said and done. I agree with panyan, if you want to spend more than about 20 quid total on a keyboard then I would recommend you buy a mechanical keyboard instead. They are so much nicer to type on, even for relatively short periods of time, also they are built to endure, and many of them wouldn't be destroyed by you spilling Coke into them either. I could launch into a lot more detail on the subject of mechanical keyboards and the various switches available etc, but I'm not going to waste time doing that until I know weather or not you are really interested in such a prospect.

Oh it just occurred to me, if you are interested in knowing more about mechanical keyboards and why they are better than regular rubber dome or scissor switch types and what is available etc, just see this thread here. It will save me a lot of typing too :)

They just look like the sort of thing I used to use at school..

I'd buy another Logitech media keyboard but they dont make the one I have anymore :(

People always go on about mechanical keyboards but tbh they are quite niche and are extremely loud as well.

I'm still using a Gen 1 G15 and it's really good, backlight is finally starting to stop working though :(

Go mech, no point in domed keyboards for that kind of price. Support for the LCD is poor to non-existent.

The G510 is great to use both for gaming and it's quiet and comfortable enough to type on for long hours. It's a good £30 cheaper than the G19 at most places and sometimes it's available for as low as £60.

My full thoughts of it here: http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/logitech_gaming_keyboard_g510_review,1.html

I personally love mine and it makes everything else I've used seem poor in comparison. Granted I've never used a gaming mechanical keyboard but I use my G510 for work regularly and it's brilliant. I couldn't live without the volume roller either now, it's that useful and painless to use with media applications.

Is there any advantage of the G510 over the G19? I'm thinking the extra 30 quid is probably worth it if the G19 is everything the 510 is and more.

Just thinking about whether the smaller screen is quite limited in functionality. Looked at a video of it being used for Teamspeak and it didnt seem to show who was speaking etc.

and are extremely loud as well.

That entirely depends on which switches you have, they are only really loud with Cherry Blues, the clicky Alps, white Fukkas (I am not swearing here, that really is the name of the switch) and similar and the good old IBM buckling springs.

Fox: If you want a G series board then, I'd probably just go the whole way and get the G19 if you really want one, might aswell go all in for the sake of 30 quid, you'll probably only wonder what you are missing otherwise.

Wondering if the full colour LCD might be a bit distracting and that a monochrome one might suit what its for a bit better? Or is that rubbish?

I'd either get the much cheaper (but still excellent) Sidewinder X4, or pay the extra for a proper mechanical keyboard. The G19 doesn't look worth the money.

I think the monochrome one is basically the same as the display on the Logitech Z10 speakers, which I have been using for about 3 years or so now, it glows a soft orange and I have never found it distracting ...having said that it isn't right infront of me like the G series keyboard ones would be. I can't really speak for the full colour display.

I don't want a mechanical keyboard - they all look pretty horrible really. I don't doubt the mechanicalness is amazing for FPS gamers but given I was entirely satisfied with the keys on my previous Logitech keyboard I'm not sure its worth paying £100 for something that looks like it cost £10 and was last seen in a school IT lab circa 2001 :p

I think you just described the whole of the G series there.
