Calling all racing sim gurus! After trying the GRID demo last night i want to get into sim racing :D I've read on here that LFS is also worth getting (although i think it looks a bit dated) and notice that Dirt 2 is out in sept so was thinking it would be worth investing in a wheel rather than a 360 pad.

So my choice comes down to which wheel set - G25 £123 or Formula Force Ex £40?!

Obviously the price difference is considerable so I'm wondering if anyone has tried both (or used similar) could they answer these questions:

1. Is the extra rotation (900º vs 180º) on the wheel a bonus in racing games?
2. Are the non pneumatic pedals in the Formula Force Ex too flimsy?
3. Is having all the buttons on the steering wheel rather than the separate gear shift box better (i.e. as on the Formula Force Ex)?
4. Are the differences enough to warrant the extra £80 on the G25?

TIA

Although I like GRID and it's a great game, it's a million miles away from a racing sim.

So don't buy a wheel and a game like LFS and expect to be able to drive GRID style. Racing sims take a lot of prqactice and patience to play and even more to be fast.

But to address your wheel questions, I have a G25 but not tried the FF Ex.

1. I don't use any rotation of more than 200 degrees, at the end of the day any racing car doesn't use 900 degrees of steering rotation.

2. Don't know, but the G25 pedals and base are rock solid and the base has non slip carpet grip as well.

3. I had a Momo wheel before and that had six buttons on the wheel, plus the gear paddles, which was enough. Having said that I do us all the extra buttons on the G25 gear stick.

4. The bigest difference is build quality and force feedback strength and quality. The G25 is very solid and you certainly won't be disappointed if you buy one. It will also work on a PS3 and GT5 Prologue.

Personally if you are serious about racing sims then you owe yourself a good quality wheel and pedals.

i bought a G25 last year and its been worth every penny !!!

its an expensive piece of kit i grant you, but its build quality is superb and should last you for many many years...

if you have the cash treat yourself :p

GRID wasnt the be all and end all, i just realised on a random download whim that i actually quite like racing games (used to play GT 2 + 3 loads on PS2) :D

Downloading demos for GTR Evo, LFS and DIRT currently - any others u'd recommend?

If you buy GTR Evolution then the previous SimBin games (GTR 1 and 2) have had their cars and tracks ported as mods. http://www.nogripracing.com/files.php?maincat=5

You can also try the Volvo game from SimBin for free.

I would also recommend rFactor. You can download the whole game/demo for free, but you need to purchase a licence to enjoy the huge amount of mods, tracks and cars available for it.

Then use http://www.rfactorcentral.com/ and http://www.racesimulations.com/index.php for content

I have been wondering also.. I like Grid, I know it's not the most realistic, but I do really like it. Has anyone played Grid on the G25? Does the Force Feedback work properly? Is it a big hassle to set up the wheel for Grid?

When i first tried Grid on my G25 it was a nightmare to setup and get working correctly, but when sorted it was fun, not sure what its like now to setup.

My experience of GRID and a G25 is it doesn't work properly.

I tried the work around/setup suggestions from this forum and it still doesn't work properly, especially the pedals.

What exactly is the issue with it?

For me, the force feedback effects didn't work, the acelerator was the clutch pedal, and I couldn't remap any of the buttons or pedals in the game.

Changing the in game sensitivity and satuartion etc made it easier to steer than before, but it was still crap.

The in car models are awesome though.

You don't need a wheel at all to play GRID (and probably Dirt2), and you can't be assured that you will enjoy sim racing just because you enjoyed GRID (they come from different worlds).

I'd recommend trying a sim if at all possible, G25 money is a lot to spend on something you may not enjoy. If you have the patience though and do go for a G25 + sim, then there is so so much love to be found in the art of driving fast.

steer clear of the "force ex" there pants, i brought one and after a couple mths of use the problems started,
For some reason the "force ex" is all plastic construction. even where the wheel goes into the base, its "plastic on plastic" and as it wears the wheel went sloppy on the base, with up and down movement.

The G25, now that is a wheel, you wont regret it

Edit,
as for games(sim), then its gorra be rfactor with the "F1RFT 2008 v3.1" + "F1RL 2009 v2" mods, thats if you like ya F1 of coarse

'Not the most realistic' is possibly the biggest understatement going for GRID. I don't think there is an ounce of sim in it.

I absolutely love it, it's replaced NFSU2 as my favourite PC racing game. I'm not a fan of simulations though, too hardcore for me, I prefer just messing around powersliding round hairpins at 100mph all the time and so on.
