Well I received my new G5 today from logitech as an RMA replacement, they sent me the blue version with 2 buttons. I had the rust effect version to begin with, before I had tracking issues with my steelseries s&s but I was able to fix it with a firmware upgrade. I'm having the same issue again with my new one, whenever I try to make quick movements it stutters and skips, I can't really find any information in regards to a firmware upgrade for this particular version. I'm also using Vista 64 bit, anyone else had similar issues or can offer any advice I would much appreciate it!

this is an issue with all laser mice, as far as i know.
for "high-speed" gamers, the MX518 is a better choice, as it remains responsive at much higher speeds.

i had a Steelseries mouse mat and a G5, is the mouse mat the thin plastic one, with a slighty rough surface?

I changed my mouse mat to a nice matt cloth one and now all fast movements are picked up perfectly.

When my G7 mouse is acting up I tried contacting Logitech support but they did not even bother to reply even once so my experience with them is not a good one but I still love my G7 and even got a new one from the bay.

Heres part of their reply. I was having problems with my mouse double clicking on single click.

This normally happens because of the interference. I would like to inform you that any electrical device, such as the computer monitor, Zip drives, speakers, etc., can cause interference with Logitech cordless products. Most likely, this will affect tracking of pointing devices or the range of the device. Also, using Logitech cordless devices on a metal desk or a desk with a metal frame can cause problems with pointing device behaviour and range. To resolve these types of issues, try moving the electrical devices at least 8 inches away from the receiver. Interference issues can also be resolved by moving the mouse closer to the receiver.

If you are getting the problem i think you are, then there is no fault with the G5, its the mousemat thats giving you the problem.

Is the problem that when you try and move the mouse fast, the pointer looses its position and spazz's out? but if you move it round slowly its fine?

If thats the case then try a normal non-reflective cloth mousemat.

Yeah logitech gave me a similar response, they also gave me a list of compatible mouse pads should anyone else want to know:
