Depends whether you want to go wireless or corded really (I think the G5 is wired?).
I'd highly recommend the G7 if you want to go wireless. Comes with two batteries, so one charges whilst you the other is in the mouse and you just quickly (<2s) change them once one has ran out.
The G7 is a bit smaller than the MX1000 and I think has fewer buttons(for instance the thumb trigger is only one button, not a rocker switch) but the on-the-fly sensitivity is nice and the swappable battery packs is a nice touch.
The G5 is basically just a wired version with adjustable weights to compensate for the lack of the battery pack as I understand it.
Depends on how much you play games and how much you will miss the extra buttons.
I bought a G7 for gaming, but really miss the MX1000 for everything else.
But I am playing games less and less all the time (read: getting old) so am seriously considering going back to an MX1000. Wonderful mouse.
If your thinking of going for a G5, just think of the extra hassle a cable has, especially when it snags and you catch it with other things on your desk. The x2 battery packs supplied with the G7 are a lifesaver.
If that'a all you use, then yes, the G7 is very good, just get used to swapping battery packs before a gaming session and you will be OK, they do run down fairly quickly compared to other wireless mice and you don't want to get caught out.
They will last you for many hours of continuos use before you need to consider swapping packs though.
Oh, and put a spot of tipp-ex on one so when you accidentally mix them up,, you know which one you just dropped, fumbling with them then finding youve just put the flat one back in your mouse ends up in most certain death
