G5 has been discontinued and replaced by the G500.
Never used the G9, but from a comfort level I really enjoy the G5. If have to replace it with something else I would choose a similar shaped mouse instead of the G9 which looks uncomfortable to me. Someone which have used the G9 will probably come and prove me wrong, but I'll stick to the shape I know to be comfortable.
Don't know too much about the G9 though so can't really tell you what the difference is, apart from the obvious higher dpi on the G9.

I would say G5 (or G500 now) but purely because i don't like the shape of the G9, Not really tested it enough to make a proper judgement though.
As for the G5, i have had mine for about 8 months now and i think it's great, lovely to hold and very accurate.

g9x replaced the g9. the g500 is not the replacement for the g9x as its priced lower, at least according to logitechs site
