Logitech Harmony or alternative

I'm in dire need of getting some kind of device that plugs into my PC and allows me to control the volume via a wireless remote.

I have the XFI platinum but I really dislike how laggy the software is that does the volume and have ditched it.

Is the harmony suitable for controlling the volume / bass / treble of a normal Win XP machine or is it not suitable for use with a computer at all? Also, does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
