I'm looking for a new keyboard and I really like the look of the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard but the price seems a bit high. Compared to the other keyboards in that price range it doesn't seem to offer as much as some of them, so I'm left wondering is it worth the price when in that price range there's also the Razer Lycosa, the Saitek Eclipse 3 or Saitek Cyborg?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

id say go for the lycosa its cheaper and so much more better
if you wanna saitek the eclipse is the one to go for
but overall the lycosa is the best
youtube it if you dont believe me there eare plenty of reviews :)

The reviews I've seen seem to favour the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, which is the one I ended up going for. It's a bit pricey but hopefully worth it. I'd love to have got hold of a UK Razer Tarantula, but they appear to be hard to come by.

I was looking at the logitech the other day.
Gotta say it does look awesome in all its backlit, lowprofile sexiness.
The Lycosa just looks like they tried too hard with the design.
That said Razors mouses look way better than logi's

Swings n roundabouts

the Eclipse is good and the lycosa is aswell (ive got both) the usb port on the lycosa isnt great, ive had problems using a xbox controller in it

I've got to say the Lycosa does look good, although I'm a bit put off by the fact that when the backlight is off you can't see the key markings well according to some reviews I've read. Do any owners find this a problem?

Edit: Also is it possible to set up different profiles with the Lycosa as I see you can reprogram every key on it, but if you can't set up profiles it seems a bit pointless?

Yes you can.

I'm a bit put off by the fact that when the backlight is off you can't see the key markings well according to some reviews I've read.

Even in a very brightly lit room you can barely see the key markings unless the backlight is on. I just leave it on all the time anyway except when I'm not using the pc.

I've had my Lycosa for about 6 months now and the only problem I have had is that very rarely (once a month at most) certain keys will stop working until I physically unplug the kb and plug it back in. Its very strange. Sometimes its only 1 key, other times its a couple, but they always work again after unplugging it and plugging it back in.

Besides the above, i've been very happy with the Lycosa. Although it is a bit of a dust magnet (I have the mirror finished edition) so needs cleaning a lot.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks, that does help. I think I'm almost set on the Lycosa now, although the price difference from the eclipse is a bit of a jump. I just need convincing it's worth the extra now;)

As for the keys stopping working occasionally you could try a firmware update as I had a Razer Copperhead mouse that occasionally would stop working until I unplugged it which was a known issue, but seems to be fixed now (I didn't update the firmware in the end as it died so I got a new one but this one doesn't have the prob, so I guess it's a firmware update that's fixed it)

You get what you pay for. I have the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard and it is great for typing and gaming, looks good and has worked flawlessly.

The only design fault in my opinion is that the function keys when lit up don't show the F1, F2 etc but instead the shortcut characters for browser, e-mail etc, which is not much use if you want to know which F key you're pressing.

Otherwise it's by far the best PC keyboard I've ever used.

I have the Logitech. I used a Coolermaster Alloy Q before that which I loved, but the keys started getting nackered, so I wanted a nice keyboard to replace it!

The Logitech is nice and low-profile, minimalistic, doesn't take up much space on the desk unlike these hideous gaming keyboards. The backlight function is nice, I have it permanently on and I'm used to it now. The setpoint software is very nice too - I have an Mx Revolution too so I'm used to it.

I would be happy buying another one but I don't have any experience with your other keyboards so can't compare really.

I'm really stuck now having said that I was nearly decided on the Lycosa, there are a few things I'm wondering if the Logitech can do better.
I have a copperhead and there doesn't seem to be options to set any of the buttons to launch a programme such as internet browser, email or media player in the driver window so I'm wondering if the Lycosa's buttons can be assigned to do this as I assume the driver will be similar. Also using the Copperhead drivers I can't put any special keys in a macro as the option is greyed out. Is this the case with the Lycosa too? I haven't tried very hard to find a fix as I don't need that sort of thing on the mouse but I will want it on my keyboard.

My current Logitech keyboard allows me to do this so it's swaying me a bit towards the Illuminated as I know the functions I want can be assigned

You can assign any key to open anything you want on the Lycosa. You can also control winamp, itunes, real player or media player using the touchpad even while gaming etc without having to minimize, which comes in very handy.

This is a pic of the software. You just click on any key you want and set its function or macro. Simple.

In terms of functionality either will do what you ask. As always with peripherals it comes down to personal preference. I had the predecessor to the Lycosa but immediately realised I didn't like the feel of the keys and sold it. I took delivery of a Cherry one which I sent straight back. The Logitech works for me (and has undoubtedly the best illumination of any non-mac keyboard I've seen) but I'm sure others will prefer something more showy with gazillions of features that they may (or may not use) and more ports than you can find mice for.

Fortunately distance selling laws mean you can always send back the keyboard if you don't like it, if you can't get somewhere to try before you buy.

I have recieved the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard for christmas and love it except for one deal breaking flaw; the W Shift and Space bar don't work together so you can't sprint and jump in games. My dad bought it for me so hopefully he can get it replaced for one that does work.

Change the sprint key? :D I can run and jump in games just fine with this keyboard.

I never knew how important having a back light keyboard can be. It makes typing so much easier.
